Step 1: Break up the numbers into thousands, hundreds, tens and units.
Eg.8 743= 8000 + 700 + 40 + 3 minus 5000 - 600 - 80 - 4
Step 2. Break down a number further to help you subtract
Eg. Break down 743 = 600 + 130 + 13.
Step 3. Subtract the broken down numbers seperately.
Eg. 8000 - 5000, 600 - 600, 130 - 80, 13 - 4
Step 4. Add the thousands, hundreds, tens and units together.
Eg. 3000 + 0 + 50 + 9
