The Hormones
by Emily T. Espejo

Illustrated by: Rodel Rimando

A high school student named Ashley went to the library one day to look for
something to read that would be fascinating. She then selected a book on the
function of hormones in the body. Ashley read that hormones are chemical
compounds that function within the body as messenger molecules. Hormones
are essential to the control and operation of the reproductive system. They make
an impact on the body’s ability to reproduce, grow, and process nutrients.
As soon as the bell rang, Ashley returned to her classroom because Miss
Alberto already started her Science lesson and the topic is all about the function
of hormones. Ashley was grateful and delighted to impart her knowledge to her
classmates. Because of the advance reading she did. She was able to explain
that the two hormones that is responsible for reproduction, the FSH and LH.
Follicle-Stimulating Hormones (FSH) help control the menstrual cycle and
stimulate the growth of eggs in the ovaries. Luteinizing hormones (LH), help
control the menstrual cycle needed to support pregnancy. She also mentioned
about endocrine system or the “system of checks and balances”, which means it
keeps the body in balance by regulating the growth and development. The
Pituitary gland, monitors and regulates bodily functions through hormones that it
produces. When the endocrine system is not properly doing its job, it may result
to a condition known as “hormonal imbalance”.
Ashley ended up her sharing with a smile, because she believes that when
you read you develop your mind and you will know the lessons in our life.
