mixed method research

Mixed method research combines quantitative and qualitative approaches to provide a comprehensive understanding of research problems. It includes three designs: convergent, explanatory sequential, and exploratory sequential, each serving different purposes in data collection and analysis. This approach enhances validity and reliability by integrating numerical data with rich, descriptive insights.

Mixed method research

To understand mixed method research, it's essential to first know how research is classified.

Research has been classified by Design/method and by purpose.

By design/Method there are two approaches of research

1. Quantitative research

2. Qualitative research

By purpose there are 3 approaches of research

1. Basic research

2. Applied research

3. Evolution research

Quantitative research
Quantitative research is a research approach that focuses on collecting and analyzing numerical
data to understand a phenomenon or relationship. It aims to:

1. Measure variables
2. Identify patterns and trends
3. Test hypotheses
4. Predict outcomes
5. Generalize findings to larger populations

Quantitative research often involves:

1. Surveys
2. Experiments
3. Statistical analysis
4. Questionnaires
5. Numerical data collection
This approach provides objective, reliable, and replicable results, helping researchers.

Qualitative research:
Qualitative research is a research approach that focuses on gathering in-depth, detailed, and
nuanced information about people's experiences, perceptions, and meanings. It aims to:

1. Explore complex phenomena

2. Understand social contexts
3. Capture rich, descriptive data
4. Identify patterns, themes, and meanings

Qualitative research often involves:

1. Open-ended interviews
2. Focus groups
3. Observations
4. Text analysis
5. Case studies

This approach provides valuable insights into people's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, helping
researchers develop theories, models, and understandings of social phenomena.

Mixed method research

Combination of quantitative and qualitative and Quantitative approach in a single study to
achieve a more comprehensive understanding of a research problem. This approach

1. Integrates numerical data (quantitative) with rich, descriptive data (qualitative)

2. Provides a more nuanced and detailed understanding

3. Enhances validity and reliability

4. Allows for triangulation of findings

More explanation about mixed method research.

• Combine qualitative and quantitative approach in a single study.

• Answer a broader and more complete range of research questions.
• Collect both open and close data (qualitative + quantitative data) in response to research
questions.
• Analyze both forms of data may ever give priority to one or both forms of data.
• Air inside and understanding that might be missed only if single method is used.
• Illustrate that researcher personal reflections inside in to the continued research.
• Approach to research that has philosophical foundation.
• The purpose is to build on the synergy and strength that exist between quantitative and
qualitative research method.
• Understand phenomena more fully than is possible using either quantitative ether
qualitative or qualitative method alone.
• Provides stronger evidence for a conclusion through convergence and verification of
findings.

Mixed Method research Deigns/Methods

Mixed method research design has 3 design/methods.

1. Convergent mixed method.

2. Explanatory sequential method

3. Exploratory Sequential method

1. Convergent mixed method

Both quantitative and qualitative data are collected simultaneously analyses separately
and then merged or combined at interpretation or reporting stage.

Simultaneous data collection.

In convergent mix method quantitative and qualitative data are collected concurrently or in
close proximity to each other. This allows for a comprehensive examination of research
questions as both types of data can provide different insights and prospectives.

Separate data analysis:

After Data collection the quantitative and qualitative data are analyzed separately using
appropriate analysis techniques. This involves statistical analysis for quantitative data and
thematic analysis or other qualitative analysis method for quantitative data.
Comparison and integration:
The next step is to compare an integrate the findings from the separate analysis. This involves
examing patterns themes or relationship identification in both sets of data and exploring how
they align or diverge . Researchers look for convergence complementarity , or disscnance
between the quantitative and qualitative findings.

Convergence synthesis:
In this convergent mixed method approach the final stage involves synthesizing the quantitative
and qualitative findings to provide a comprehensive interpretation or understanding of the
research questions this synthesis can involves creating explanator models developing
comprehensive narrative or generating new hypothesis.

2. Explanatory sequential method

Explanatory sequential method involved conducting a study in two distinct phases.
a quantitative phase followed by a qualitative phase.

The purpose of this sequential design is to provide a deeper understanding and explanation of
the research topic by using the result form the research topic by using the result from the
research topic by using the result from the initial quantitative phase to inform and guide the
subsequent qualitative phase.

Quantitative phase: -
• In the initial phase researchers collect an analyze quantitative data using established
quantitative research methods and techniques.
• The focus is on collecting data from a large sample size to get there broad and
generalizable information about the research topic.
• Researchers typically use structured survey, questionnaires, or their quantitative
instrument to collect data.
• Qualitative data analysis to identify patterns, relations and trends in the data.

Qualitative phase:
• After completing the quantitative phase researchers proceed to qualitative phase.
• The purpose of qualitative phase is to provide a deeper exploration and understanding
of the research topic.
• Researcher use qualitative research methods such as interviews, focus group or
observation to collect a rich detail or context specific data.
• Qualitative data analysis involves coding, thematic analysis and interpretation of the
collected qualitative data to identify themes patterns and insights.

3. Exploratory sequential method:

Exploratory sequential method is a specific approach in mixed method research that involves
conducting a study into distinct phases qualitative followed by a quantitative phase.

The purpose of this sequential design is to explore or research topic or phenomena in depth
through qualitative exploration before moving on quantitative validation or generalization.

Qualitative phase:
• The initial phase of study focuses on qualitative data collection and analysis.
• Researchers used qualitative research methods such as interviews, observation or focus
group to gather rich in-depth data about the research topic.
• Qualitative data analysis involves coding categorization, thematic analysis to identify
patterns themes and findings.

Integration and planning:

• After completing to qualitative phase researchers integrate and analyse the qualitative
finding.
• Researchers used to qualitative data to inform that design of the subsequent
quantitative phase such as developing quantitative measures or identifying variables of
interest.
• The integration process involves interpreting the qualitative findings and formulating
research questions or hypothesis to be addressed in the quantitative phase.
Qualitative phase:

• The initial phase of the study focuses of quantitative data collection and analysis.
• Researchers use qualitative research methods such as interviews, observation or focus
groups to gather rich, in depth data about the generation of hypothesis or initial
theories.
• Qualitative data analyses involve coding, categorization and thematic analysis to identify
patterns themes and key findings.

Integration and synthesis:

• In the final stage researchers integrated and synthesized the qualitative and quantitative
finds.
• The integration process involves comparing and fantastic the qualitative and quantitative
result, identifying convergence or divergence between the two data sets.
• Researchers draw connections between the qualitative insights and
• Quantitative results, providing a comprehensive and disconnect understanding of
the research topic.
