Human Microbiome

The human microbiome consists of trillions of microorganisms that play crucial roles in digestion, vitamin synthesis, immune system training, and protection against harmful microbes. It also influences the gut-brain axis, affecting mood and behavior, while its imbalance can be linked to various diseases. Maintaining a healthy microbiome is important, and factors such as diet and antibiotic use can significantly impact its health.

**Human Microbiome**

The human microbiome is the collection of trillions of microorganisms living in and on the human

body.

1. **What is it?**

Includes bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa-mostly in the gut, skin, mouth, and other organs.

2. **Roles of the Microbiome**

- Helps in digestion

- Synthesizes vitamins (like B and K)

- Protects against harmful microbes

- Trains the immune system

3. **Gut-Brain Axis**

The gut and brain communicate through the vagus nerve. An unhealthy microbiome can affect mood

and behavior.

4. **Impact of Antibiotics and Diet**

Overuse of antibiotics can harm beneficial microbes. A balanced diet with fiber supports a healthy

microbiome.

5. **Microbiome and Disease**

Links with obesity, diabetes, depression, and autoimmune diseases are being studied.

The microbiome is like an invisible organ essential for our survival.
