English Test - 10th Grade
Space Exploration

Name: _______________________________________________ No: _______ Class: ______

A. Answer the following question in about 25-30 words.

Is finding water in space an important event for mankind? Why? Why not?

ICE ON THE MOON

"Some of you reading this - I guarantee it - are going to live and work on the moon!"
says Alan Binder, NASA's chief investigator of Lunar Prospector, a spacecraft that has been
orbiting the moon since January, 1998.
Thanks to the data Lunar Prospector immediately began to transmit to NASA centers in
5 California and New Mexico, scientists soon discovered an amazing find: stores of water
concealed in craters on the moon's north and south poles!
Some scientists around the world are elated about prospects of water on the moon,
particularly the wealth of information the ice could reveal about the age and formation of the
moon's craters. But many remain skeptical.
10 Of course, the water isn't readily handy in plastic bottles. It's ice, mixed in with lots of
lunar soil. Theoretically, if collected and melted, the water could fill 15,000 Olympic-sized
swimming pools.
But even if you could extract a respectable amount of ice, Binder and others admit that
inventing technology to operate at sub-zero temperatures would be extremely difficult.
15 Another obstacle would be the means and high cost of transporting water from poles to
proposed lunar bases at the equator, thousands of kilometers away.
"The moon would be a great place to learn how to live on another planet, like Mars,"
says Binder. Picture the moon as the coolest science lab in the universe, where you can study
physics, astronomy, human physiology... you name it! In addition, a one-way trip to the moon
20 takes only three days - just in time to shuttle home for the weekend.
Binder predicts that humans may return to the moon within 10 years to sample lunar ice
for themselves. Who knows? Better brush up on your moon walk!
