ACC 205 MIS lecture 1

The document introduces Management Information Systems (MIS), which involves the planning, development, management, and use of information technology tools for information processing. It outlines the components of an information system, including hardware (input, output, storage, CPU, telecommunications, and connecting devices) and software (application and system software). Additionally, it lists various types of information systems and functional business systems relevant to organizational management.

MODULE ONE: Introduction to Management Information System (MIS)

1. What is Management Information System (MIS)?

MIS deals with the planning for, development, management, and use of information technology
tools to help people perform all tasks related to information processing and management. On the
other hand, information technology (IT) is any computer base tool that people use to work with
information and support the information and information-processing needs of an organisation. IT
is one of the three key elements along with people and information of MIS.
2. Components of an information system (hardware, software, data, procedures, people)
HARDWARE
All hardware falls into one of the following six categories.
1. Input device - tools you use to enter information and commands. It includes such tools as a
keyboard, mouse, touch screen and bar code reader.
2. Output device - tool you use to see, hear, or otherwise recognise the results of your
information-processing requests. Output devices include such tools as a printer, monitor, and set
of speakers.
3. Storage device - tool you use to store information for use at a later time. Storage devices
include such tools as a hard disk, flash memory card, and DVD.
4. Central processing unit - the hardware that interpretes and executes the system and application
software instructions and coordinates the operation of all the hardware. Popular personal CPUs
include the Intel Pentium and Xeon product lines and the AMD Athlon series. RAM is a
temporary holding area for the information you are working with, as well as the system and
application software instructions that the CPU currently needs.
5. Telecommunications device - tool you use to send information to and receive it from another
person or computer in a network. For example, if you connect to the internet using a modem, the
modem is a telecommunication device.
6. Connecting device: include such things as a USB port into which you would connect a printer,
connector cables to connect your printer to the USB port, and internal connecting devices on the
motherboard.
SOFTWARE
There are two main types of software: application and system. Application software is the
software that enables you to solve specific problems or perform specific tasks. Microsoft Word,
for example, can help you write term papers. From an organisational perspective, payroll
software, collaborative software, and inventory management software are all examples of
application software. System software handles task specific to technology management and
coordinates the interaction of all technology device. Within system software, you will find
operating system software and utility software. Operating system software is system software

1
that controls your application software and manages how your hardware devices work together.
Popular operating systems include Microsoft Windows (and all its versions e.g. Windows 10, 8,
7, XP; Vista 7, 8, 10, 11; Windows server 2003, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2022 and others), Mac OS,
Linux, and Unix. Utility software is a software that provides additional functionality to your
operating system software. Utility software include antivirus software, screen savers, uninstaller
software (for properly removing unwanted software), file security software etc.
