Convex mirrors curve outward and create virtual, erect, and diminished images, making them ideal for use in rear-view mirrors. Key concepts include the principal axis, focus, and center of curvature, with specific rules for drawing ray diagrams to locate images. The document outlines the steps for creating ray diagrams and highlights applications in various settings such as vehicles and security.

Title: Ray Diagrams for Convex Mirrors

Content:

 Introduction:
Convex mirrors curve outward and always form virtual, erect, diminished images. They
are used in rear-view mirrors due to their wide field of view.
 Key Terms:
o Principal axis, focus (F, behind mirror), center of curvature (C, behind mirror).
o Negative focal length (as per sign convention).
 Rules for Ray Diagrams:

1.Ray parallel to principal axis → Reflects as if coming from F (behind mirror).

2.Ray toward C → Reflects back along the same path.
 Example Case: Object at any position (e.g., at a finite distance).

o Steps:
1. Draw a convex mirror (curved outward) with principal axis.
2. Mark F and C behind the mirror.
3. Place object (arrow) in front of the mirror.
4. Draw Ray 1: Parallel to axis, reflects as if from F (extend backward).
5. Draw Ray 2: Toward C, reflects back (extend backward).
6. Locate image where rays appear to meet (behind mirror).
o Result: Image is virtual, erect, diminished, between pole and F.
 Diagram Description:
Show a convex mirror, principal axis, F and C behind, object in front, two rays diverging,
extended backward to form a virtual image behind the mirror.
 Applications: Rear-view mirrors, shop security mirrors.
