intro to Stoichiometry

The document discusses methods to increase the percentage yield of a chemical reaction, such as removing impurities and monitoring reaction conditions. It provides the formula for calculating percentage yield, which is the actual yield divided by the theoretical yield multiplied by 100. An example calculation is included, demonstrating how to determine the percentage yield from given actual and theoretical yields.

STOICHIOMETRY

INCREASING PERCENTAGE YIELD

Increasing the percentage yield of a reaction can be achieved a
number of ways:

Remove Monitor
Use clean Oven dry
impurities from reaction
reactants.
glassware. glassware.
conditions.
CALCULATING THE PERCENTAGE YIELD
Actual yield
Percentage yield = Theoretical yield
x 100

The theoretical yield is the maximum possible mass of a product that can be
made in a chemical reaction and this can be calculated before carrying out
the reaction.
WORKED EXAMPLE:COPPER SULFATE
Copper oxide reacts with sulfuric acid. Copper sulfate and water are made. In an experiment, 1.6 g
of dry copper sulfate crystals are made. The theoretical yield is 2.0 g. Calculate the percentage
yield of copper sulfate.

Actual yield (1.6 g)

Percentage yield = Theoretical yield (2.0 g)
x 100 = 80%
QUESTION
In an reaction, the calculated theoretical yield is 6.4 g but the
actual yield of the reaction is only 4.8 g. Calculate the
percentage yield.
ANSWER
4.8 g
x 100
6.4 g

= 75%
