1. It is thought that men and women had different opinion regarding new budget proposals
that were to be approved by the city council. In order to verify this claim, samples of men
and women were taken and the numbers of those agreeing with the budget proposals
were recorded. The data obtained is given in the table below.

(a) Construct a 95% CI for the difference between the proportions of men and women
agreeing with the proposal.
(b) Using the results in (a) above, are the views of men and women different? Give reason
to your answer.

2. There are two production lines in a certain company which manufactures and packs 50g
sachets of soda. A quality control inspector is interested in comparing variability between
the two production lines. He collected data from the two lines, which is given below:

Line 1: 48.4, 49.6, 52.4, 50.6, 51.1, 49.7, 50.1, 48.8, 50.0, 50.2, 49.9, 50.5, 49.9
Line 2: 50.0, 47.9, 51.9, 48.3, 50.1, 52.6, 47.9, 52.6, 51.3, 48.1, 53.1

(a) Construct a 95% CI for the ratio of the variances of the two lines.
(b) Using the results in (a), test the hypothesis that variability is different for the two lines.

3. A certain manufacturing company sent 12 workers for a workshop with the aim of
increasing productivity. The workers’ average weekly production levels were measured
before they went for the course and were measured again after they attended the course
and they are given in the table below.
