DSC 5 Case Study
DSC 5 Case Study
Objective-
To examine the case of a typical child named Lavish, by applying the ecological
theory perspective utilizing existing secondary data.
Background:
Lavish is a 10-year-old boy from a tribal family living in Delhi, India. He has a
younger sister named Kanika, and their mother, Malti, works as a
bookkeeper/purchaser in a small manufacturing company. Lavish's father, Kumar,
passed away in an accident when Lavish was six years old, and unfortunately he
witnessed the incident but has been hesitant to talk about it. Lavish's family
depends on his uncle, Subhash, for assistance following his father's passing. He is
enrolled in a public school within their local community, where he has encountered
academic struggles and behavioral difficulties.
Family structure:
Lavish's family consists of his mother Malti and his younger sister Kanika.
Tragically, Kumar, Lavish's father, was killed in an accident when he was just six
years old. Since then, the family has received support and involvement from
Subhash, the father of Lavish's elder brother. Lavish's mother, Malti, supports the
family through her employment as a bookkeeper/purchaser at a small
manufacturing firm. Malti, a single mother, must balance taking care of her two
kids with running the home.
Lavish and his five-year-old sister Kanika have a combative relationship. Malti,
however, is continually concerned about her daughter's safety as a result of
Lavish's violent behaviour. Kanika, in turn, has started to exhibit panicky
behaviours and has isolated herself from her loved ones. In place of Lavish's father,
Subhash has assumed a big responsibility for providing for the family. He takes on
the role of a carer, providing direction, emotional support, and help with a variety
of facets of their lives.
Mesosystem:
Exosystem:
The social environments and situations that indirectly affect Lavish's development
are included in the ecosystem. The assistance given by Lavish's uncle Subhash
after the passing of his father is one noteworthy aspect. The assistance Subhash
provides to the family expands Lavish's support system and pool of resources.
Malti, Lavish's mother, also works as a bookkeeper/purchaser, which has an impact
on the family's earnings and financial security. The continual effort to find extra
sources of income serves as evidence of how the economic environment affects the
family's quality of life.
Macrosystem:
The macrosystem refers to the broader cultural and societal influences on Lavish's
development. Lavish's tribal background and their relocation from the southern
area of India to Delhi reflect the cultural context within which he is raised. The
cultural norms, values, and resources available to Lavish within this context
influence his experiences and opportunities.
Chronosystem:
The chronosystem in Lavish's narrative highlights the impact of time and historical
events on his growth and mental wellbeing. The tragic death of Lavish's father and
his unwillingness to discuss it impact his mental wellbeing and behavior.
Bronfenbrenner's ecological theory helps analyze Lavish's story, emphasizing the
importance of considering all factors affecting a child's life to gain a
comprehensive understanding of their experiences.
Impact of Peers:
Lavish's limited emotional connection with peers and few friendships may
contribute to his feelings of isolation and frustration, impacting his social and
emotional development.
Bullying targeted towards Lavish due to his minority status aggravates his
aggression, particularly towards his sister (displacement), and may further isolate
him from his peers, hindering his social integration and emotional well-being.
Impact of Media:
Media representation of tribal and minority groups may shape Lavish's perception
of his own identity and how others perceive him.
Learning Difficulties: Lavish has a history of mild learning problems, which can
impact his academic progress and overall development. These difficulties may
contribute to frustrations and a sense of inadequacy, further influencing his
behavior and emotional well-being.
Recommendations:
Lavish, a tribal boy from a tribal household, faces challenges such as losing his
father, dealing with violent behavior, and struggling with school learning. To
overcome these issues, Lavish requires support from family, community members,
and the school. His and his sister's well being depends on their treatment and
emotional support.
To reduce Lavish's behavior, he can improve his family's financial position and use
reinforcement and punishment to learn appropriate behaviors. Subash, his uncle,
encourages Lavish to emulate the behaviors he believes society should encourage.
Catharsis, a therapy strategy that allows Lavish to express and process his
emotions, can help him manage his emotions more effectively. This approach can
lead to more beneficial actions and a sense of belonging in society.
