Control System S

The project aims to design, implement, and test a PID-controlled system to balance a ball on a beam by adjusting the beam's angle using sensors and actuators. It includes system modeling, control design, simulation in MATLAB, and optional hardware implementation. The expected outcomes are a fully simulated control system and enhanced understanding of real-time feedback control systems.

Objective:

The goal of this project is to design, implement, and test a control system
capable of balancing a ball on a beam by adjusting the beam’s angle. The
project will utilize sensors to measure the ball’s position and actuators to
control the beam angle, maintaining the ball at the desired setpoint.

Scope of the Project:

1. System Modeling:

o Represent the system in state-space and transfer function

formats.
2. Control Design:

o Design and implement PID controllers.

o Compare the performance of controller under various conditions.

3. Simulation:

o Simulate the system and controllers using MATLAB.

o Validate system stability and performance in the virtual

environment.

4. Hardware Implementation (optional based on feasibility):

o Use Arduino/STM32 or similar microcontroller.

o Utilize position sensors (e.g., potentiometer or IR sensor).

o Control a servo/motor to tilt the beam.

5. Analysis:

o Evaluate system response time, stability, and error reduction.

o Plot performance metrics like overshoot, settling time, and

steady-state error.

Expected Outcomes:

 A fully simulated hardware-implemented closed-loop control system.

 A deeper understanding of real-time feedback control systems.

Tools & Resources:

 Software: MATLAB/Simulink, Proteus (for simulating hardware)

 Hardware : Arduino/STM32/Esp32, Servo Motor, Ball & Beam

Structure, IR or position sensors

Conclusion:

This project presents a well-known but technically rich challenge that

demonstrates the practical applications of control theory in real-time
systems. By addressing the inherently unstable dynamics of the ball-on-
beam setup, it offers a hands-on opportunity to explore core concepts such
as feedback control, system modeling, and actuator-sensor integration.
