Lesson 4- Derivative Practice Equations

This document is a learning module for ES 13 – Calculus 1 (Differential Calculus) at Central Mindanao University, focusing on derivatives, slopes, and rates of change. It includes sample problems for students to practice finding derivatives and determining slopes at specific points on given functions. Additionally, it presents real-world applications of differentiation, such as calculating the rate of change in volume for geometric shapes and sales models.

General Instruction: Below are sample problems to help students review the concept of the Derivatives, slope
and rate of change. Verify the answer by comparing and discussing the answer with a fellow student.

Part I. Determine the derivative of each given function.

Follow the step-by-step procedure in determining the derivative of a function.

1. 𝑓(𝑦) = 𝑦 3 6. 𝑓(𝑥) = 2𝑥 3 + 4𝑥
1 2 𝑥2
2. 𝑓(𝑦) = 2
𝑦 7. 𝑓(𝑥) = −4

3. 𝑓(𝑦) = (𝑦 − 2)2 (𝑥−5)2

8. 𝑓(𝑥) = −16
−3
4. 𝑓(𝑦) = −4(𝑦 + 2)
𝑥−1
1+5𝑦
9. 𝑓(𝑥) = √ 2
5. 𝑓(𝑦) = 2𝑦+4

10. 𝑓(𝑥) = √−3𝑥 − 2

Part II. Given the following equations of a line, determine the slope at the given point on the graph.
Apply the concept of differentiation.

1. 𝑓(𝑦) = 𝑦 3 + 2 ; @(10, 2) 6. 𝑓(𝑥) = 3𝑥 2 + 7 ; @(2, 19)

2. 𝑓(𝑦) = 2𝑦 2 − 1 ; @(1, 1) 7. 𝑓(𝑥) = 2𝑥 3 − 3𝑥 2 + 4𝑥 − 5 ; @(1, −2 )

3. 𝑓(𝑦) = |𝑦 − 7| ; @(12, −5) 8. 𝑓(𝑥) = −5𝑥 − 8 ; @(−2, 2 )

4. 𝑓(𝑦) = √𝑦 ; @(2, 4) 9. 𝑓(𝑥) = (𝑥 + 1)(𝑥 − 1) ; @(2, 3)

5. 𝑓(𝑦) = 𝑦 3 ; @(27, 3) 10. 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 3 − 3 ; @(−3, −30 )

Part III. Apply the concept of differentiation to solve the

1. Find how fast the volume of a cube increases as the length of its edges increases.

2. Find how fast the volume of a cylinder increases as the radius increases. Assume height, h of the

cylinder is constant.

3. The position, x of a moving vehicle is given by the function 𝑥 = 6𝑡 2 − 5𝑡 + 4. Determine the rate at

which position of the vehicle changes with respect to time.

𝑡 2 −𝑡+1
4. The model 𝑓(𝑡) = 𝑡 2 +1
measures the level of oxygen in a pond, where t is the time (in weeks) after

organic waste is dumped into the pond. Find the rates of change of f with respect to t when:

(a) t = 0.5 (b) t = 2 and (c) t = 8

5. The monthly sales of memberships M at a newly built fitness center are modeled by
300𝑡
𝑀(𝑡) = 𝑡 2 +1 + 8. Find M’(t).
