1. INTRODUCTION AND WELCOME
1.1 Welcome
Dear Student
Although we are separated by distance, this does not mean that your lecturers regard
each of you merely as a computerised number. On the contrary, to us you are a learner
with ideals, dreams and expectations. We understand your problems as a part-time
student with other urgent and equally important obligations. Therefore, we want to assist
you academically, encourage you personally and help you to deal with any study
challenges you might have. Your progress is of the utmost importance to us and,
therefore, we expect you to start working through your study material early in the year.
This tutorial letter (Tutorial Letter 101) contains important information about the scheme
of work, resources and assignments for this module. The assignment assessment
standards, instructions for completing and submitting assignments, the prescribed study
material and all other resources form part of this tutorial letter. We have also included
certain general and administrative information about this module. Read this tutorial letter
carefully and keep it at hand when working through the study material, doing the
assignments, preparing for the examination and addressing questions to your lecturers.
Please read Tutorial Letter 301 in combination with this tutorial letter since it contains
valuable information and guidelines for studying at the College of Education.

Please read all the tutorial letters you receive during the course of the year immediately
and carefully, since they always contain important and, sometimes, urgent information.
1.2.2 myUnisa
If you have access to a computer that is linked to the internet, you can quickly access
resources and information at the University. The myUnisa learning management system
is Unisa’s online campus that will help you communicate with your lecturers, fellow
students and the administrative departments of UNISA – all through the computer and the
internet. It is, therefore, of utmost importance that you obtain access to the internet and
consult myUnisa on a regular basis. Please note that, once you are registered on
myUnisa, you will be able to submit your assignments through myUnisa (online), have
access to library resources, be able to download your study material to keep record of the
assignments you have submitted, and have access to your marks, previous examination
papers and examination dates.
PLEASE NOTE: Various discussions will be taking place on myUnisa during the year. We
expect you to participate in these discussions at least once per month. Students usually
enjoy the discussions, as it is an exciting way of sharing concerns, success stories and
challenges with regard to economics and entrepreneurship.
To go to the myUnisa website, start at the main UNISA website (http://unisa.ac.za) and

• Do the Discussion Forum activities. When you do the activities for each learning
unit, we want you to share your answers with the other students in your group. You
can read the instructions and even prepare your answers offline, but you will need
to go online to post your messages. We have also provided a Social Cafe where you
can socialise with the other students in the module.
• Do other online activities. For some of the learning unit activities you might need to
post something on the Blog tool, take a quiz or complete a survey under the Self-
Assessment tool. Do not skip these activities because they will help you complete
the assignments and the activities for the module.
• One of the main tools that we use is the Lessons tool. The content of and
assessments for your module will be provided in this tool. At times, you will be
directed to join discussions with fellow students and complete activities and
assessments before you can continue with the module.
We hope that by giving you extra ways to study the material and practice all of the activities,
you will succeed in the blended module. To get the most out of the blended module you
MUST go online regularly to complete the activities and assignments on time.
Consult the publication, Study @ Unisa, which you have received with your study material
for information on the various student support systems and services available at UNISA
(e.g. student counselling or any issue related to student support).
5.1 Contact with fellow students and the establishment of study groups
5.1.1 Study groups
It is advisable to have contact with your fellow students. One way of doing this is to form
study groups. The addresses of students in your area, may be obtained from the following
department:
12
Directorate: Student Administration and Registration
PO Box 392
Unisa
Pretoria
0003
If you are repeating this module, contact the lecturer early in the semester so that he can
arrange additional support for you.
6 STUDY PLAN
The brochure, Study @ Unisa, contains valuable information on where to begin with your
studies. I suggest that you write down the closing dates for all the assignments you have
to submit this year and compile a study schedule for each module according to the due
dates. You can use the following as a guideline for planning your studies for OTE2601.
Period Activity
12
OTE2601/101/0/2023
For many students, the transition from school education to tertiary education is beset with
anxiety. This is also true for first-time students to Unisa. Unisa is a dedicated open
distance and e-learning institution. Unlike face-to-face/contact institutions, Unisa is
somewhat different. It is a mega university and all our programmes are offered through a
blended learning mode or fully online learning mode. It is for this reason that we thought it
necessary to offer first-time students additional/extended support so that you can
seamlessly navigate the Unisa teaching and learning journey with little difficulty and few
barriers. In this regard we offer a specialised student support programme to students
entering Unisa for the first time. We refer to this programme as Unisa’s First-Year
Experience (FYE) Programme. The FYE is designed to provide you with prompt and
helpful information about services that the institution offers and how you can access
information. The following FYE programmes are currently offered:
• FYE website: All the guides and resources you need to navigate through your
first year at Unisa can be accessed using the following link:
www.unisa.ac.za/FYE
• FYE e-mails: You will receive regular e-mails to help you stay focused and motivate
FYE broadcasts: You will receive e-mails with links to broadcasts on various topics
related to your first-year studies (e.g. videos on how to submit assignments
online).
• FYE mailbox: For assistance with queries related to your first year of study, send an
e-mail to [email protected]
13
7 ASSESSMENT
See the brochure, Study @ Unisa, which you have received with your study material for
general information and requirements as far as assignments and the examination are
concerned.
Please note:
Although you may work together when preparing for assignments, you must write and
submit your own individual assignment. In other words, you must submit your own ideas
in your own words, sometimes interspersed with relevant short quotations that are
properly referenced. It is unacceptable to submit identical assignments on the basis that
you have worked together. This is copying (a form of plagiarism) and none of these
assignments will be marked. Furthermore, you may be penalised or subjected to
disciplinary proceedings by the University.
ALL assignments must be submitted electronically via myUnisa and posted hardcopies
will be rejected. Remember to allocate exactly the same number to an assignment as
the one provided in Tutorial Letters 101, 102 and so forth. For example, even if
Assignment 02 is the first assignment that you submit for the year, you must still number
it 02 and not 01.
Please consult the brochure, Study @ Unisa, which you have received with your study
package for detailed information on assignments.
14
OTE2601/101/0/2023
The closing dates for submitting assignments and their unique numbers are as follows:
You should be able to complete these assignments by consulting your study guide and
any other relevant sources.
7.4 Plagiarism
It is unethical (and unacceptable) to hand in assignments that are not your own work.
When the University becomes aware of such malpractices, it will take stern measures
against the student concerned. Although you may work together when preparing
assignments, each of you must write and submit your own individual assignment.
Assignments are regarded as part of the learning material for this module. As you do
the assignments, study the reading texts, consult other resources, discuss the work with
fellow students or tutors or do research, you are actively engaged in learning. Looking
at the assessment criteria given for each assignment will help you understand more
clearly what is required of you.
15
7.6 General remark regarding assignments
When you make enquiries about an assignment, you must provide the course code
(OTE2601L) and the number of the assignment.
As soon as you have received the feedback, please check it against your answers. The
assignments and the feedback on these assignments constitute an important part of your
learning and should help you to be prepared for the next assignment and the
examination.
7.8 Examination
Please study the brochure, Study @ Unisa, for general examination guidelines and
examination preparation guidelines. It will take you quite a while to complete your
assignments. Therefore, you should start with them in good time. The main part of the
examination paper is based on your study guide. You will undoubtedly benefit from
spending a considerable amount of time on your assignments.
16
OTE2601/101/0/2023
You are reminded that this is a year module. This means that, you will write the
examination in October/November 2023 and the supplementary examination in
May/June 2023.
During the semester, the Examination Section will provide you with information on the
examination in general, such as examination dates and times. There will be no venue-
based examination, instead it will be online.
See the brochure, Study @ Unisa, which you have received with your study material for
general information and requirements as far as the examination is concerned.
Please note the following: You have to obtain a subminimum of 40% in the examination
to pass the module. If you obtain less than 40%, you will fail – irrespective of your
semester mark. For example, if you have 100% for your semester mark, but obtain 37%
in the examination, your final mark will be 37%. Should you obtain 40% or more in the
examination, the semester mark will count 20% towards your final mark, and the
examination 80%. In order to pass the module, you must obtain 50%, and to get a
distinction, you must achieve 75% or more.
You will be assessed on Assignments 01 and 02, which will contribute 20% towards your
final mark, while the examination will contribute 80% towards your final mark. In order to
qualify for the examination, you must submit Assignments 01 and 02 for which a mark
will be awarded.
17
OTE2601/101/0/2023
In order to prepare for the examination, you should submit all the assignments. You will be
admitted to the examination by submitting and passing Assignments 01 and 02.
The duration of the examination paper is three hours and the paper will count 100 marks. The
paper contributes 80% towards your final mark. The final results are, therefore, weighted in
favour of the examination, which is critical to your success in this module. Your examination
results and semester mark will be combined.
To prepare for the examination, you will have to study the study guide and the assignments.
No examination guidelines will be sent to students.
Please note: This is a new module, which does not have previous examination papers. We
advise you, however, not to focus on the assignments only, because the content of the
examination papers will change from year to year. You should accept that examination
questions might not be similar to the questions asked in the activities in your study guide.
The brochure, Study @ Unisa, contains an A-Z guide of the most relevant information.

9. ACADEMIC DISHONESTY
9.1 Plagiarism
Plagiarism is the act of taking the words, ideas and thoughts of others and presenting them as
your own. It is a form of theft which involves several dishonest academic activities, such as the
following:
• Cutting and pasting from any source without acknowledging the source.
• Not including or using incorrect references.
• Paraphrasing without acknowledging the original source of the information.
9.2 Cheating
9.3 More information about plagiarism can be downloaded on the link below

The Advocacy and Resource Centre for Student with Disability ARCSWiD) provides an
opportunity for staff to interact with new and returning students with disabilities.
• If you are a student with a disability and would like additional support or need additional
time for assessments, you are invited to contact Dr S Meeran on [email protected]
so that you can be assisted.
