Assignment4_german course

The document discusses advancements in wearable computing, specifically focusing on wearable prosthetics and smart clothing. Wearable prosthetics are designed to mimic human limbs and provide tactile feedback, enhancing the user experience for amputees. Smart clothing integrates health monitoring features, such as smart socks that track various metrics and can assist in analyzing health conditions like Parkinson's disease.

23.4 Concrete examples of wearable computing

23.4.4 Example 4: Wearable prosthetics
Technology has had its impact on a lot of fields of life and health care is
not an exception. Most smart devices in the field have a nature of
monitoring, collecting, and analysing information of a person - like heart
rate or sugar level. However, there are also examples of wearable
computing when it comes to prosthetics.

One of the main purposes is to make the prosthetics as similar to a
human body as possible, for example by helping people feel touch. Since
the bionic transplant is a limited option for amputees (due to donor
requirements as well as surgical complexity and immune suppression),
artificial prosthetic devices can perform similar to a biological system by
adding a tactile sensor element to it.

Tactile feedback helps upper limb amputees with object shape, texture
identification, firm grasping, slip detection. On the other hand, lower
limb prosthesis uses haptic feedback for gait and balance control, to
reduce joint problems as well as to eliminate fear of falls.

Earlier artificial tactile systems for prosthetic devices were based on
silicon and were restricted. However, modern prosthetic devices have
been designed to meet the structure, shape, size, weight, and functions of
natural human limbs. The development of stretchable, wearable, and
sensitive tactile sensor system would improve the overall experience.

23.4.5 Example 5: Smart clothing

Smart clothes can also be a part of IT in health care. Although there are a
lot of examples of clothes and accessories being able to be connected to
smart phones and providing extra features, there are no less examples of
smart clothes that have health monitoring as their goal.

The recent advances of foot related wearable sensors are mainly realized
by using insoles or shoes. However, the sock can still be functionable for
scenarios, were shoes are not needed (indoor).
The proposed socks are composed of two layers of conductive textiles
covered with two electrification materials and include the silicone rubber
and the nitrile.
The particular model can distinguish the personalised gait signal
including human activity and identification as well as it can be used as a
power source for energy harvesting. Moreover, the sock can be used to
analyze the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.
