The document discusses the concept of symmetry in mathematics and its relevance in art, design, and architecture, highlighting types such as bilateral and radial symmetry. It also covers patterns in nature, including natural patterns like fractals and spirals, and introduces various pattern types such as rosette and frieze patterns. Each pattern type is characterized by specific symmetries and arrangements, illustrating the organization of information and aesthetics in both natural and human-made objects.

MMW Symmetry
- occurs when there is
congruence in dimensions, due Mathematics proportions and arrangement. It - is a study of patterns and provides a sense of harmony and relationship, a way of thinking an art, balance. a language and a tool. It is about - one of the foremost patterns and relationships. Numbers predominant themes in arts, design are just a way to express those and architecture all over the world patterns and relationship. and throughout human history. - it is a set of problem solving - can also be explained as the tools, a language, a process of passage of time, a spatial relationship thinking, and a study of patterns and an aesthetic element found within among others. abstract objects, theoretic models, language music and even knowledge -It help us to organize and itself. systematize our ideas about patterns; in so doing, not only can we admire Reflection or Bilateral Symmetry and enjoy these patterns, we can also - one of the most common kind used them to infer some of the of symmetry that we see in the underlying principles that govern the natural world. It can also be called world of nature. mirror symmetry, because an object with this symmetry looks unchanged PATTERNS AND NUMBERS IN if a mirror passes through its middle. Lesson 1- SYMMETRY Rosette Patterns
- consist of taking motif or an element and rotating and or reflecting that element. There are two type of Rosette Patterns: 1. CYCLIC -if it only admits rotational symmetries. 2. DIHEDRAL -if it admits both rotational and bilateral symmetries.
Frieze Patterns ( John B. Conway )
- frieze or border pattern. Apattern in which a basic motif repeats itself over and over in one direction. - It extends to the left and right in a way that the pattern can be mapped onto itself by a horizontal translation. - found in walls of buildings, fabrics, borders of rigs and tiled floor.
TYPE OF FRIEZE PATTERNS
1. Hop - only admits a translational symmetry 2. Step - only admits a translational glide symmetry 3. Slide -only admits translation and vertical reflections 4. Spinning Hop -only admits translational and 180 degree rotations ( half turns ). 5. Spinning Siddle - only admits translations, vertical reflections, rotation, and glide reflection 6. Jump - only admits translations, a horizontal reflections, and glide reflection 7. Spinning Jump - admits translations, vertical, horizontal, rotations, and glide reflection. Wallpaper Patterns
