ABSTRACT

This study examines the level of awareness of Grade 12 GAS students at

Mayamot National High School regarding school rules and regulations and how it

affects their behavior. Understanding school rules is important because it helps maintain

discipline and creates a safe learning environment. However, not all students may be

fully aware of these rules, which can influence their actions in school.

This study was accomplished in Mayamot National High School during the

academic year of 2024 – 2025. The researchers decided to use questionnaires as the

research instrument and created a survey questionnaire based on the rules and

regulations written in the official handbook of Mayamot National High School and on the

statement of the problem or the questions that the study aims to answer. The

questionnaire was divided into 3 parts, the first part of the survey aims to assess the

students’ level of awareness regarding the school’s rules and regulations. The second

part of the survey aims to assess the students’ awareness regarding the category of

violations. The third part of the survey aims to assess the effects of the level of

awareness to the students’ behavior.

By using the purposive sampling method, the study chose a population of 118

GAS students, and took a sample of 30 GAS students as the respondents for the survey

questionnaire and gather data from them. Afterwards, the researchers organized the

collected data and used descriptive statistics by computing the mean or the average

score for each question in the survey questionnaire.

The study revealed the following findings:

1. Most of the respondents were not aware of the school’s general rules and

regulations.

2. Among the school’s rules and regulations, the prohibition of possessing

pornographic materials was mostly recognized by students, indicated by gaining

a mean of 3.76 in the survey questionnaire. It can then be concluded that

disciplinary measures regarding this policy were most effective.

3. The least recognized policy among the school’s rules and regulations was the

discouragement of cut or eyebrow line, indicated by gaining a mean of 2.96 in the

survey questionnaire. It can then be concluded that disciplinary measures

regarding this policy were least effective.

The study suggests that improving communication and enforcement of rules may

encourage better student behavior. Schools should focus on more effective ways of

informing students about the rules and regulations and implementation to promote

discipline.
CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

This chapter presents the background of the study, the statement of the problem,

the significance of the study and the scope and delimitations of the study.

Background of the Study

Rules and regulations help maintain order within a society, serving as guidelines

in achieving good behavior for each individual. Within the educational setting, rules are

set so that students can understand what is expected of them, and so that our

educators can create a safe and positive place of learning for everyone. According to

Prodigy Game (n.d.), classroom rules can help create a strong sense of community,

which makes learning easier and more effective.

At Mayamot National High School, it is important for Grade 12 GAS (General

Academic Strand) students to be aware of the rules and regulations. The GAS includes

many different types of students with varying skills who are preparing to enter into

various educational fields or careers. Their level of awareness of the school’s rules and

regulations can affect not only their academic performance, but also their development

as a person. According to The Adhyayana International Public School Educational

Institute (2023), “School rules play a fundamental role in guiding students toward

success and discipline. They shape behavior, build character, and create a balanced,

respectful environment where academic and personal growth flourish.”

Since Grade 12 GAS students are about to graduate and move on to the next

stage of education or enter into the labor force and starts their careers, knowing the
school’s rules and regulations is even more important. Understanding these rules can

help them manage their school life and prepare for future challenges. This research

aims to assess the level of awareness of the rules and regulations of Mayamot National

High School among Grade 12 GAS students, which is important in preparing them for

challenges they may face both in the academic and working environment.

Statement of the Problem

Awareness of the school’s rules and regulations is important for students to

behave properly and succeed in their studies. At Mayamot National High School, it is

more important for Grade 12 GAS students to be aware of these rules in preparation for

their future plans. The main purpose of this research is to assess the level of awareness

on the rules and regulations of Grade 12 GAS students at Mayamot National High

School.

To achieve this objective, this research aims to answer the following questions:

1. What is the level of awareness of the rules and regulations among Grade 12

GAS students at Mayamot National High School?

2. What are the effects of the level of awareness and understanding on the rules

and regulations to the behavior of Grade 12 GAS Students?

Significance of the Study

This research on the level of awareness of Grade 12 GAS students regarding school

rules and regulations at Mayamot National High School will significantly benefit the

following:

Students. By understanding the rules and regulations clearly, students can avoid

disciplinary actions and maintain a positive academic record. This awareness can also

foster a sense of responsibility and encourage active participation in maintaining a

helpful to learning environment.

Teachers. The findings of this study will provide valuable insights into student

understanding of school rules, enabling teachers to address any misconceptions or

areas of confusion effectively.

This will contribute to a smoother and more productive learning environment for both

teachers and students.

School Administration. The research will help the administration assess the

effectiveness of current policies and identify areas for improvement in rule

dissemination and enforcement. This information can be used to develop more effective

communication strategies and create a more student-centered approach to disciplinary

action.+

Parents and Guardians. This research will provide parents and guardians with a

better understanding of the school's rules and regulations. This shared understanding
will foster better communication and collaboration between parents/guardians and the

school in supporting student success.

Future Researchers. The findings of this study can serve as a baseline for

future research on student awareness of school rules in different contexts, such as

other grade levels or different school settings. It can also contribute to a broad

understanding of student behavior and school climate.

Scope and Delimitation

The scope of this study is to assess the level of awareness on the rules and

regulations of grade 12 GAS students at Mayamot National High School Through the

utilization of survey questionnaires, the researchers will be gathering data from the

students with focus on the assessment of their level of understanding regarding the

school’s rules and regulations.

The delimitations of the study include focus on Mayamot National High School

and its Grade 12 GAS Students within the Academic Year 2023-2024 only, and insights

within the research will be limited to students and excluding other parties such as

teachers and parents.

CHAPTER II

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

This chapter presents the review of related literature and studies, the conceptual

models of the study, the hypothesis and the definition of terms used in the study.

Review of Related Literature and Studies

Various references have been utilized to gather information regarding this study.

The Review of Related Literature (RRL) aims to explore previous studies related to

students’ awareness and compliance with school rules and regulations. Understanding

whether a student’s awareness of rules and regulations has any relation to their

behavior is important in creating a favorable learning environment.

Discipline is an integral part of human nature. It helps people follow rules and

make responsible decisions. In the context of this research, discipline is important

because it creates an environment where students can learn without disruptions.

According to Fekadu (2019), Discipline is an important component of human behavior,

and one could assert that without it, an organization cannot function well toward the

achievement of its goals. This highlights the role that discipline plays in the context of a

school’s rules and regulations.

In addition to highlighting the importance of having discipline within individuals, it

is also crucial that an individual knows, or is aware of the rules and regulations of the
school itself. This is so that they are aware of what they should follow and what it is they

are expected to follow. "Knowing school rules and regulations is essential because it

helps maintain order, ensures fairness, and promotes a positive learning environment"

(Johnson, 2021)

As it is important to acknowledge the role that awareness plays in the students’

compliance of the school’s rules and regulations, it is also vital to address how to

spread that awareness into the student body of a school. According to Cruz and Reyes

(2020), one major factor is the extent to which schools provide orientation programs for

new students. These programs, when conducted regularly, help familiarize students

with the school’s rules and regulations. Additionally, the role of teachers in reinforcing

these rules through classroom discussions is considered a critical factor. This highlights

that, although students are responsible of their own familiarity of the policies, students

are at the same time expected to be aware and compliant of the rules and regulations of

the school and that the school personnel also play a role in influencing the students’

familiarity of these rules and regulations. In a study by Morales (2021), it was found that

students who had more opportunities to engage in conversations about rules and

regulations were more likely to remember and follow them. Parental involvement also

plays a significant role in the awareness of school rules. Research by Lopez (2019)

emphasizes that when parents are informed and involved in their child’s school

activities, including understanding the school's expectations, students show higher

levels of awareness and compliance with school policies.

Awareness of the school’s rules is essential as students that are informed, are

more likely to follow the rules that the school have set. In another study, Salazar (2019)

emphasizes the effectiveness of a school’s system of rules and regulations depends on

students’ comprehension of the rules. According to the study, "students who lack a clear

understanding of school rules are more likely to engage in behavior that undermines

institutional discipline". This shows the need for the schools to ensure that all the

students are well-informed regarding the rules and regulations and the consequences

involved when violating these rules in order to maintain peace and order within the

school community.

An effective way of achieving this goal is to make the rules more visible by

integrating them into visible forms for the students to see. "Rules should be visible and

accessible in various forms, whether through printed materials, digital media, or physical

signs. When rules are easily accessible, they serve as constant reminders to students"

(Tan, 2021). This highlights the importance of making school rules easily visible,

through posters, handbooks, and digital platforms. This ensures that students are

constantly reminded of the rules.

Conceptual Models of the Study

The conceptual models that guided the researchers in conducting the study are

shown in a paradigm form in figures 1.
