Problem Solving
Prepared by:
Marriane Phoebe D. Bucayu
I. OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

A. define the concept of proportion;

B. apply the appropriate formulas of proportional relationship; and
C. interpret mathematical models based on proportional relationships.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

A. Topic: Proportion and Formula
B. Reference: Proportions.” Mathematics LibreTexts, 19 June 2023,
math.libretexts.org/Courses/Western_Oregon_University/Math_110%3A
_Applied_College_Mathematics/01%3A_Numbers_and_Relationships/

C. Materials: Laptop, marker, activity sheets, visual aids
D. Values Integration: Understanding proportions helps in decision-making
and problem-solving in everyday life.
III. PROCEDURE

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

A. PRELIMINARY ACTIVITY

1. Greetings
2. Prayer
3. Classroom Management
4. Checking of Attendance

B. MOTIVATION
Before we start our lesson, we will be
having first an activity called “THE FAIR
TRADE”

Introduction: The teacher introduces the

concept of trade and fair exchange.

Have you ever traded something with a

friend (e.g., toys, snacks, or school
supplies)?
Yes ma’am
Mechanics:

1. The teacher will divide the class into 3

groups.
2. The teacher provides different trade
situations.
3. Each group choose one member to
present their answer

Scenario:
1.You have 3 pencils and want to trade
them for erasers. If 1 pencil is worth 2
erasers, how many erasers should you get
for 3 pencils?
2. A farmer has 5 sacks of rice and wants
to exchange them for apples. If 1 sack of
rice equals 20 apples, how many apples
will he get?
3. A cinema is running a promotion: For
every 2 movie tickets purchased, you get 1
free bucket of popcorn. If a family buys 6
movie tickets, how many free buckets of
popcorn will they receive?

(after the activity….)

Based on your activity what do you think

our topic for today?
Proportion ma’am
C. PRESENTATION
Our lesson for today is all about the
Proportion and formula.

D. LESSON PROPER
Last meeting, I told you to have an
advance reading about our topic for today,
so I assume that you can answer my
question right?
Yes ma’am

What is proportion and formula?

A proportion is an equation that states two
ratios are equal ma’am
Very good! A proportion in simple terms, it
shows the relationship between two
quantities.

Formula for Proportion:

A proportion is written as:
a/b = c/d
or using a colon notation:
a:b=c:d
Where:
 a and b form one ratio
 c and d form another ratio
 The two ratios are equal

To check if two ratios form a proportion,

use cross multiplication: a × d=b × c
If this equation holds true, then the two
ratios are proportional.

For example:
1. 3/4= 6/8
3×8=4×6
24=24
Therefore it is proportion since both
quantities is equal.

Did you understand class?

Yes ma’am
Try to this problem
Solve for x in= 3/5 =x/10 (students are answering their seatwork)

E. GENERALIZATION
What is proportion?
Proportion is an equation that shows the
relationship between two quantities
ma’am.
Can you give example of proportion?

Trading ma’am.
What is the formula of proportion in
fraction?
a/b = c/d ma’am
What is the formula of proportion in
notation?
a:b=c:d ma’am
How can you identify is the problem is
proportion? If the result is equal ma’am.

F. APPLICATION
For us to learn more about the probability
of compound events, we will be having an
activity called “REAL-LIFE PROPORTION”.

Mechanics:
1.The teacher will divide the class into 3
groups.
2.Each group will receive a real-life
scenario.
3. Each group will solve the given problem
using proportion and formula and present
their solutions to the class.

Problems:

1. A recipe for 4 people requires 2 cups

of flour. How much flour is needed for 8
people?
2. If a car travels 60 miles in 2 hours,
how far will it go in 5 hours at the same
speed??
3. A map scale says 1 inch = 5 miles. If
two cities are 3 inches apart on the map,
how far are they in real life??
IV. EVALUATION

“Quiz Time”

Direction: Solve the following problems (3 points each). Show your solution.

1. A car consumes 5 liters of fuel for every 50 km. How many liters will it need for 120
km?

2. A building model is 2 feet tall, and the real building will be 50 feet tall. If a model door
is 6 inches, how tall will the real door be?

3. A store sells 3 apples for $2. How much would 9 apples cost?

4. A painter can cover 40 square feet in 10 minutes. How long will it take to paint 100
square feet?

5. A runner covers 5 miles in 30 minutes. How long will they take to run 8 miles?

V. AGREEMENT
A. Follow-up
A camera lens has a zoom ratio of 1:3. If an object appears 2 inches in normal
view, how big will it appear at full zoom?
B. Advance
1. Research the Golden Ratio and how it relates to proportions in art and nature.
2. How does the concept of proportion apply in engineering and architecture?
