THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter presents the Introduction, Background of the Study, Scope and

Limitation of the Study, Statement of the Problem, Paradigm of the Study, Theoretical

and Conceptual Frameworks, and the Definition of Terms.

Introduction

The majority of today’s world make use of the fast-paced technology, especially in

the Philippines, which consistently ranked fourth worldwide for being one of the highest

contributors to social media, as stated in an article by Caparas (2024). According to

Global Digital Records' (GDR) statistics of 2024, an average of 80% of Filipinos use the

internet, with 76% are connected to social media platforms. Out of the population of

Filipinos who use social media, almost 73% are aged 17 below (GDR, 2024). With this,

recent studies also show that serious mental health problems are becoming more

prevalent among teens, thus resulting in various difficulties among families,

communities, and especially academically. Nowadays, social media is often described

as the utmost urgent and pressing topic of today’s world. (Myers, 2022)

Mental health problems connected with extensive use of social media includes

depression, insomnia, stress, and addiction. "The less you are connected with human

beings in a deep, empathic way, the less you're really getting benefits of a social

interaction," Dr. Alexandra Hamlet, PsyD, a clinical psychologist, points out.

Background of the Study

With the current digital era, social media has become an integral part of every

student’s life. Social media sites like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat

provide channels for communication, entertainment, and even education. However, the

increasing use of social media among students raises concerns about its effects on

academic performance and overall well-being. In an analyzed survey data from 1,459

middle schoolers in the United States, found that their academic achievement

decreased as their Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and X—formerly known as Twitter

—usage increased. They also found that parental communication made a big

difference, playing a part in whether school grades increased or decreased (Gordon and

Ohannessian, 2023).

Several studies have suggested that excessive social media use may contribute to

distractions, reduced study time, and lower academic achievement. Students often find

themselves engaged in social networking activities, leading to procrastination, and

difficulty managing their academic responsibilities. On the other hand, social media is

also used as a tool for learning engagement, where students can access educational

resources, work on school projects, and be updates on educational opportunities. A

large body of research suggests that social media function as a double-edged sword; on

one hand, social media helps people free from the restriction of time and space, and

communicate with each other more effectively; on the other hand, excessively using

social media also brings some detrimental effects on people’s mental health (She et al.,

2023).

Beyond academic, social media also affects students’ well-being, while it provides

a platform for self-expression and connection, excessive use of social media influences
their mental health, self-esteem, and social anxiety; excessive use of social media can

lead students to depression caused by cyber-bullying and low self-esteem due to not

being in contact with people as much. Past research demonstrates that individuals with

high social media use intensity tend to report high social anxiety (e.g., Jiang and Ngien,

2020). Balancing the benefits and drawbacks of social media is crucial in understanding

its overall impact on grade 10 students.

Scope and Limitation of the Study

This study aims to explore the relationship between social media usage,

academic performance, and well-being among grade 10 students. By examining their

online habits, time management, and academic engagement, the study seeks to

determine whether social media serves as a helpful tool or a hindrance to their success.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to investigate the impact of social media usage on the academic

performance and well-being of grade 10 students.

Specifically, this study seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of:

1.1. Name (Optional)

1.2. Age

1.3. Sex

2. How many electronical devices does the respondent have at home?

3. The number of the respondent’s social media accounts on various platforms.

4. How the respondents are influenced by social media in terms of academic,

mental, physical, and emotional well-being shown by a tier list, ranked from most

stable to most unstable?

5. What are the considered benefits and challenges of social media usage among

teenagers?

Theoretical Framework

The theory of impact of social media on the academic performance and well-

being of Grade 10 Students, Ghulam Murtaza studied that overusing social media might

cause students to lose productivity in the classroom and struggle with time

management. Constant alerts, ceaseless feed scrolling, and the allure of viral content

can easily divert students from their academics. This research showed that many

students heavily rely on their gadgets and social media sites that are affecting their own

lives and performances on academics. Social media has many advantages like learning

new things, connecting with their loved ones and many more. However, this theory

showed that there is also a disadvantage of using too much social media. Murtaza

stated that social media's quick pleasure may make it harder for kids to focus and pay

attention to challenging academic assignments. Students who frequently switch

between using social media and homework are more likely to struggle to concentrate

and retain knowledge, this also affects the self-esteem of the students making it hard for

them to focus. They might develop severe stress because of overthinking so much and

also comparing themselves at people on social media. Many students are experiencing

cyberbullying and other negative online behavior that thrives in online communities can

have a serious negative influence on students' mental health. Cyberbullying incidents

have been connected to higher levels of stress, anxiety, and poorer academic

performance.

Conceptual Framework

Cooperation. Introduce. These skills are designed to understand the way the

media affects 10 students and think is good and bad. Keywords are updated.

1. Using different: using fashion. Often used. Use time. Types of items (e.g., Facebook,

4. Social changes: Bias of your friends and stress. Online assistant. Articles and internet

issues. Framework. This survey leads the following suggestions:

1. Scholarship Hurt: emphasizes the way students change behavior that looks at TV,

which can influence their study habits and health.

2. Sample. An accountant can cause relationships between these changes to see how

well the games affect the best education and good health.

An example will show here:

Control changes affect the power of relationships. Medical change describes the use of

ordinary people.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter enumerates the review of related literature and studies. The related

literature, both foreign and local, provide the researchers provide the researchers with

valuable insights into the effects of social media on various aspects of the modern-day

teenage life, including mental health, academic performance, social behavior, and self-

esteem. The review of local and foreign studies on the subject also provided the

researchers with observations, data and information that further support the analysis of

social media’s impact on teenagers.

Foreign Literature

According to the Saudi Journal of Biological Science (2021), the results showed

that 97% of the students used social media applications yet only 1% of them used it for

academic purposes. Whereas 35% of them used those platforms to chat with others,

43% of them browsed these sites to pass the time. Moreover, 57% of them were

addicted to social media. Additionally, 52% of them reported that social media use had

affected their learning activities, 66% of them felt more drawn toward social media than

toward academic activities, and 74% of them spent their free time on social media

platforms. This study focuses on the breakdown on how and why the students use

social media. It indicates that social media is not widely used as a learning tool. This
study done by Saudi Journal of Biological Science also implies that excessive usage of

social media platforms may lead to dependency, further interfering with academic

priorities.

A research by Orben (2020) proposed that the effects of social media on

students’ well-being are intricate. Orben argued that while excessive use has negative

impacts, moderate engagement can provide necessary social connections, especially

during periods of isolation. Unlike studies that focus only on negative effects, Orben

argues that the impact of social media depends on the level of engagement to that

certain platform. Students often rely on social media to maintain friendships and engage

in social interactions, which is a really important factor especially during periods such as

the covid-19 pandemic. This study suggests that instead of viewing social media as

harmful, it should be understood that with great responsibility and limited use, it may

actually enhance students’ well-being.

The relationship between social media use and students’ well-being has been a

main point of recent research, the Journal of Affective Disorders (2020) examines 12

studies involving teenagers aged 11 to 18, finding a small but statistically significant

positive relation between social media use and depressive symptoms. This study found

that while social media offers lots of advantages, excessive use may lead to increased

feelings of depression, loneliness, and anxiety among students.

Local Literature

A study conducted at Anonang National High School found that excessive use of

social media platforms, notably such as Facebook, led to decreasing academic

performance among Grade 10 students. The research indicated that students spent

more time on social media than on their studies, resulting in lower grades and

incomplete assignments. Further, research published in the International Journal of

Multidisciplinary, namely in Applied Business and Education Research highlighted that

Grade 10 students’ exposure to social media negatively affected their study habits. The

study revealed that increased time spent on social media led to poor time management,

causing delays in completion of tasks.

In contrast, a study conducted by Dimacangun and Guillena (2023), suggested

that social media, when used properly, can enhance academic interactions. As well,

students utilized social media platforms for research, problem-solving, and collaborative

learning, which positively influenced their understanding of the curriculum. However, the

same study found no significant connection between the overall use of social media and

students' performance. This suggests that the impact of social media may vary,

depending on individual patterns of usage and consumed information.

Foreign Studies

According to Sivakumar (2020), the advantages of using social media for

educational purpose are far ranging than before. It is how students socialize with friends

and acquaintances both inside and outside the campus. Social media affects one

greatly, as it makes him, in a sense, feel connected to a community. Further, it is known

that among users, especially the younger age group faces the risk of addiction (Sümen

and Evgin, 2021). Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the switch to the distance

education process was made in line with the restrictions implemented for protecting

public health. The extension of periods spent at home by adolescents has led to long
periods of exposure to screens, a restriction of outdoor activities, a reduction in peer

interactions, unhealthy sleep patterns, and increases in stress and anxiety levels (Liu et

al., 2021; Wang et al., 2020).

Moreover, Abi-Jaodeu, Patietello, and Naylor (2020), suggest that extensive use

of social media led students from middle to high school to various psychosocial and

emotional dilemma. Such are suicidal and odd-ideation, brain-deadness and eating

concerns.

Local Studies

The Filipino youths response’ regarding socio-political challenges have also made

massive breakthroughs. They’ve shown more engagement to solve and advocate for

various viewpoints and political perspectives (Ibardoleza et al., 2022). However, digital

creators who constantly appear in users’ “For You Page” (FYP), may influence one’s

performance. With trends and latest updates, student-users are very prone to “fear of

missing out” (FOMO) (Quijote et al., 2023).

According to De Vera’s (2020) interviews, some students faced the challenge of

social media in a positive and effective way, while others view such to be more

burdening for students and teachers alike. In contrast, in a survey conducted by

Abdulmajid et. al (2024) in Sulu, Philippines, found that “social media exposure did not

significantly affect the performance of students in mathematics, the performance in

mathematics of light users, average users, and heavy users of social media did not

significantly differ from one another, there is no significant difference between the
number of hours spent by male and female students, the performance in mathematics

of male and female students did not significantly differ.”

CHAPTER 3

RESEARCH AND METHOD PROCEDURE

This chapter presents the Research Method and Design, Setting of Study,

Subject of the Study and Data Gathering Procedure.

Research Method and Design

We employed a qualitative approach to obtain additional information regarding

the influence of social media on Justice Cecilia Munoz Palma High School grade 10

students. We aim to have a better insight into the influence social media has on

students' academic performance and overall well-being through the use of Google

Forms. We aim to garner preliminary feedback via this research effort in an effort to

determine measures to support students in achieving a balance between using social

media and their academic and mental well-being. Our insight could yield working

strategies or recommendations that assist students in using social media in a manner

that enhances their mental health as well as academic performance. The methods we

utilized were simple random methods; we conducted a survey in order to ensure that we

could arrange and obtain the data that we required for our study.
After obtaining the respondent's perspective, findings from the study will

contribute more towards knowing the influence of social media on the mental and

intellectual well-being of students. Discovering how students balance social media with

their studies and personal lives would help formulate practical solutions to assist

students in managing their online activity. The end objective of this study is to help

students find healthier ways of using social media while maintaining their emotional and

academic well-being.

Also, we incorporated easy but very important questions for our survey. Surveys

were conducted individually and in groups, contain a number of items that represent the

goals of the study, and through online survey. In addition to accurate and reliable

research instruments.

Setting of the Study

The study was carried out at Justice Cecilia Muñoz Palma High School

(JCMPHS). Located at Molave Street, Barangay Payatas B, Quezon City,

Congressional District 2 (CDC2), it is a public secondary school. Principal Dr. Florito

Gereña, Principal IV, is in charge of this prestigious public secondary school in Quezon

City, which is also the second most crowded school after Batasan National High School.

At the moment,

9,706 pupils in grades

seven through 10

are enrolled in the school.

The 277 teachers and

staff members who are organized into eight (8) departments helped this school

establish its dedication to providing high-quality education. Presented below is the

study's location:

Subject of the Study

This study explores the impact of social media on the academic performance of

grade 10 students at Justice Cecilia Munoz Palma, school year 2024-2025. With the

mounting dependence on social media for communication, entertainment, socialization,

and even educational purposes, students are spending crucial amounts of time on

various social media platforms. This study aims to determine the negative and positive

effects of social media and how it affects their academic performance as well as their

well-being, not just as a student, but also as a person. It also includes factors such as

students’ study habits, attention span, and productivity in school activities.

We used the simple random sampling technique. The respondents were chosen

randomly, we picked 6 sections, we asked 5 students on each section to answer the

survey. We picked 2 sections from the higher sections, 2 sections from the average

sections, and 2 sections from the lower sections. To ensure our accuracy, we made
sure that they answer honestly and we made sure that their answers will stay

confidential, that way, they can fully trust us and answer honestly.

The survey showed that Grade 10 Students from ages 15-16 uses an average of

7 social media platforms. The randomly selected Grade 10 Students uses social media

for an average of 8 hours, daily. The students also stated that social media has both

negative and positive effects, while it does distract them whenever they’re studying and

the overuse of social media affects their mental health, it also helps them communicate

with people they love easily, making it easier to connect with their family of friends.

Some of the students remarked that it is a way to voice out their feelings, and share

what they actually feel, but also knowing the boundaries and limits.

The survey helps the students share their insights and opinions on social media,

it can also help them thoroughly understand it better. With this survey, we gathered data

that are accurate and are easy to understand.

Procedure of the Study

The researchers first chose five students from each six corresponding sections—

30 in total—to conduct the survey. This is essential to attain proper results.

Respondents were also instructed with the significance of the study.

Next, the questions and materials for the survey were thought of and examined

carefully to ensure achievement of desired results. After this, the researchers finalized

the materials for distribution using Google Forms. Troubleshooting and pilot testing

were done to guarantee a smoother interaction for the respondents.

Then, we conducted and managed the research to the respondents. Responses

were carefully jotted and noted for easy management.

Lastly, after having administered the survey, the researchers assessed each

response for each question from students. Finding common denominators and

difference from each student.

Sampling Design

To ensure fairness and avoid bias, we used Simple Random Sampling technique

to select the respondents for this study. This method gave every Grade 10 student at

Justice Cecilia Muñoz Palma High School (JCMPHS) an equal chance of being chosen,

regardless of their academic performance in the previous school year. By doing so, we

aimed to gather a well-rounded set of responses that reflect different perspectives on

social media use and its effects on academic performance and well-being. Through this

sampling approach, we made sure that no specific group was overrepresented or left

out.

We did not focus on students' grades, how often they use social media, or their

well-being status when selecting participants. Instead, the random selection process

helped us create a diverse and balanced sample, making our findings more reliable and

relevant to the entire Grade 10 student population.

Data Gathering Procedure

Our study aimed to find out the role of social media in improving the emotional

quality of life of Justice Cecilia Muñoz Palma High School Grade 10 students. For that

purpose, the following procedures were used for data gathering:

We conducted a qualitative survey of the students of Justice Cecilia Muñoz Palma

High School Grade 10. We surveyed approximately 30 students in order to obtain a

representative sample of the population of Grade 10 students. Participants included at

least 5 students from different sections.

We created a qualitative survey questionnaire on Google Forms. The

questionnaire was open-ended and intended to provide descriptive data on the

students' experiences of consuming social media. Our questions were managed by our

research questions and supported by our literature review. We ensured that the Google

Form was accessible and easy to use for all the participants.

The questionnaire was sent to the targeted Grade 10 students using Google

Forms or Facebook Messenger, based on students' availability and convenience.

Researchers assist participants carefully on how to respond to the survey. All the

answers were anonymous and remained confidential. After we collected the survey

responses, we exported the data from Google Forms. We conducted a thematic

analysis of the qualitative data. This involved close reading and understanding of the

responses to identify primary themes, patterns, and insights. We organized and

categorized the data to facilitate interpretation. The analysis sought to determine the

students' perception of how social media had impacted their performance and well-

being at school. We interpreted the findings in light of our research questions and the

literature.

This assisted us in obtaining useful qualitative data that improved our

understanding of the research topic.
