Abstract
Power losses in electrical distribution systems remain a significant challenge in Electrical
and Electronics Engineering, affecting efficiency and increasing operational costs. This
research presents an IoT-based smart grid system designed to minimize technical and non-
technical power losses by enabling real-time monitoring, fault detection, and load
management. The proposed system integrates smart meters, sensors, and cloud-based
analytics to provide utilities with actionable insights to enhance energy efficiency.
Experimental results and simulations demonstrate a potential reduction in losses, improved
power quality, and optimized load balancing.
1. Introduction
Power losses in electrical distribution networks are categorized into technical losses (due to
resistance and impedance of electrical components) and non-technical losses (due to theft,
meter tampering, or billing inefficiencies). Conventional grid systems lack real-time
monitoring and control mechanisms, leading to inefficient power management. The advent
of the Internet of Things (IoT) in electrical power systems offers a transformative solution
by enabling intelligent energy distribution and minimizing losses.
2. Problem Statement
Traditional electrical distribution systems experience losses due to outdated infrastructure,
power theft, and inefficient load distribution. These losses lead to financial deficits for
utility companies and increased electricity tariffs for consumers. There is a need for a smart,
automated system capable of real-time fault detection, energy monitoring, and dynamic
load balancing.
3. Objectives
The primary objectives of this research include:
1. 1. Developing an IoT-based smart grid system to monitor and reduce power losses.
2. 2. Implementing real-time fault detection and predictive maintenance using cloud-based
analytics.
3. 3. Enhancing energy efficiency through optimized load balancing and theft detection.
5. Methodology
The IoT-based smart grid system consists of:
1. **Smart Energy Meters**: Devices that measure consumption and detect anomalies.
2. **IoT Sensors & Controllers**: Measure voltage, current, and temperature to identify
losses and faults.
3. **Cloud-Based Data Analytics**: Uses AI to predict demand, detect power theft, and
optimize load management.
4. **Web-Based Dashboard**: Provides real-time insights for utility operators.
