 Bosun chair:- Is a divice used to suspend a person from a rope to perform work aloft.

 Uses of bosun chair :-


1. Change navigation bulbs on the foremast and Mainmast.
2. Reeving halyards.
3. Applying grease to stay wires, crane wires and derrick wires.
4. For chipping and painting.
5. Painting funnel.

 Precautions Taken when working on bosun chair :-


1. Wear proper P.P.E.
2. Working aloft permit should complete.
3. Wear safety harness with safety line.
4. Check bosun chair wooden plank for damage and free from grease.
5. Visual check on gantline and bridle of the chair.
6. The safety line should secure to a separate strong point.
7. When hoisting or lowering the bosun chair. Do it manually.
8. Never use winches for hoisting and lowering.
9. Any tools or paint pot should be secure with separate rope.
10. Never keep loose thing in pocket.
11. Safety net should be rigged if applicable.
12. Ship whistle should be power off and warning notice to be posted.
13. Work near mast ensure Radar should be standby mode, MF/HF switched off.
14. Work near funnel, the duty officer should inform the duty engineer to reduce the
Emission of steam, harmful gases and fumes.
15. Before going a bosun chair inform duty officer.
16. Once work completed inform duty officer.
17. One person stand by with walkie – talkie.

 What is the use of safety harness?


Prevent falling from a height.

 Where we use the safety harness?


There is a risk of falling from a height above 2 meters.

 Difference between Safety harness and Safety belt:-


Both are used to prevent falling from a height. Safety belt is made up of single belt only,
so the wearer person if fall down he will get hurt in hip. Safety harness is made with lot of belts,
so the wearer person fall down nothing will happen.

 Double sheet bend uses.


Securing a bosun chair to a gantline

 Q) When rigging the bosun chair the gantline is secure to the chair with?
A. Double sheet Bend.
B. Round turn and two half hitches.
C. Double Carrick Bend.
D. Reef knot.
ANSWER A

 Types of permit:-
1. Hot work permit.
2. Tank entry permit.
3. Enclosed space entry permit.
4. Working aloft permit.
5. Working over side permit.

 Name of the Master/Chief Engineer and signature. (For deck only master, For engine MTR and
Chief engineer)
 Name of the responsible person signature. (In deck COF. In eng 2nd Eng)
 Name of the ship staff carrying out the work put signature.
 Permit validity 8 hours.

 Working Aloft precautions :- (Same for bosun chair and stage)


1. Wear proper PPE.
2. Working Aloft permit should be fill up.
3. Person working aloft above 2 meters should wear a safety harness with life line make
Fast with fall arrestor.
4. Never carry tools in pocket.
5. If weather is no good do not work aloft.
6. Person less than 12 months sea service should not work aloft, unless work together
With experienced person or otherwise supervised by experienced person.
7. Safety net should be rigged if applicable.
8. Ship whistle should be power off and warning notice to be posted.
9. Work near mast ensure Radar should be standby mode, MF/HF switched off.
10. Work near funnel, the duty officer should inform the duty engineer to reduce the
Emission of steam, harmful gases and fumes.
11. One person stand by with walkie-talkie.
12. Commence work inform duty officer.
13. Completed work inform duty officer.

1. Ropes having any damage during visual check.
2. Twist the rope see between the yarns if powder comes.

Using double sheet bend.

6) What checks will you make on the bosun chair before using?
1. Check wooden plank for damage and free from grease.
2. Bridle, Gantline and Safety line should be checked.
3. Blocks, Lizard, Shackles should be checked.
4. Shackle should be mousing.
5. Block will make fast on a strong point that point should be hammer test.

7) Why is it safe to hoist the bosun’s chair manually, not on a drum?


1. Manually it can lower or hoist in a controlled manner.
2. Doing lower or hoist in a drum may be machinery malfunctioning person can fall down.

8) What is weight test? When is it required to be done?


Ensure the tail block or lizard is weight tested, Who going to do work equivalent weight to be
applied before rigging the bosun chair.
