GRADE 5 TOPIC

UNIT 6 – Seasons and adaptations of plants and animals

6.1 The Earth moves around the Sun
Dictation words

1. Revolve
2. Orbit
3. Slight
4. Ellipse
5. Anticlock wise
6. Direction
7. Seasons
8. Spring
9. Autumn
10. Winter
11. Summer
12. Equator
13. Hemisphere
14. Pole
15. Tilt
Summary:
1. The Earth turns on its axis and revolves around the Sun in the anti - clock
wise direction.

2. The orbit of the Earth is not a perfect ellipse so scientists call it a slight
ellipse.
3. The average distance between the Earth and the sun is 150 million km.
4. The countries between the Equator and the North pole are in the Northern
hemisphere and the countries between the Equator and the South pole are in
the southern hemisphere.

5. When the northern hemisphere has summer, the southern hemisphere has
winter and this is because the northern hemisphere is tilted towards the Sun.
6. Seasons are caused by the earth orbiting the sun once a year and tilt of the
earth’s axis.
7. At the equator, there is equal day and night on every day of the year.

Question and answer:

1. What is a globe?
The model of the earth is called globe.
2. What causes day and night?
The day and night are caused by the rotation of the Earth on its axis.
3. What is an orbit?
The path the earth travels around the Sun is called an orbit.
4. How long does the earth take to complete one full rotation on its axis?
24 hours
5. How long does the earth take to complete one rotation around the Sun?
365 days or 1 year
6.3 – Plants and animals are adapted to different environments
Keywords:
1. adaptation
2. burrow
3. fin
4. gills
5. resin
6. thorn
7. waxy
Summary:
1. Adaptations are features that help plants and animals to live in their
environments.
Question and answers:
1. How camels are adapted to survive in the desert?
1. It has big eye lashes to prevent from sand.
2. It has a hump to store fats.
3. It has flat feet to walk on sand.
4. It has thick lips to eat desert plants.
2. How cactus plant is adapted to live in the desert?
1. It has thorns instead of leaves to prevent water loss.
2. They have deep roots to absorb water.
3. They have a fat stem to store water.
4. They have a waxy layer to prevent water loss.

Adaptation of plants in the wet environment

1. Water lilies and lotus lives in water. The have adaptations such as
 large flat leaves that floats on water
 big air spaces in the leaves to absorb sunlight at the water surface
 weak stem because water supports the plant
 small roots because the plant is in the water
Adaptation of animals in the wet environment
1. Gills allow fish to breathe under water. Fins allow the fish to move
through the water.
2. Birds like duck and geese have webbed feet to swim.
3. Seabirds have waterproof feathers to dive for food and have special
glands to get rid of salt from the seawater when they drink.
4. Flamingoes have long, thin legs to allow them walk through water
easily.

Adaptation of plants in the cold environment

1. Trees have resin on their bark, which is a sticky substance that helps
to keep the tree warm and prevents the tree from losing moisture.
Adaptation of animals in the cold environment
1. Animals have thick fur to keep them warm.
2. During winter, some animals hibernate or migrate for food.
6.4 - Adaptation of predators and prey
1. Predators – animals that kills other animals for their food.
2. Prey – animals that are killed by predators
Summary Notes:
Common adaptations of predators
speed trapping sharp claws teamwork
streamlined very good camouflage good sense of smell
body shape eyesight
venom sharp powerful good sense of
teeth hearing

Adaptations of predators
Predator Adaptations
chameleon  camouflage –change their colour to blend it with their
environment
snakes  spits venom to kill their prey or bites to inject venom
Eagles  have very good eyesight
 can spot their prey form 3 km away
 have sharp talons to grip their prey

Wild hunting  hunt in group or pack

dogs  good teamwork to surround their prey
Dogs and bears  Very good sense of smell
 Smell their prey even before they see them
Adaptations of prey
Prey Adaptations
chameleon  camouflage – to hide from their predators
Zebra, antelope,  stay in group
wildbeest  some animals in the group have ‘look-out-duty’ and
warn the rest of the animals with a special sound if
they see a predator
Fish Stay in group to defend themselves form the bigger
fish
Bees  lives in group in a hive
 use smell as a signal and beat their wings to spread the
smell
Tortoise, turtles  pull their head in under their shell for protection
Lizards,  have eyes at their sides
antelopes, fish
antelopes  runs fast
Octopus  has eight legs and eyes on each side of its head
 shoots out a cloud of ink to confuse the predator and
swims away very fast
Bees and wasps  sting the predator
Ants  spray the predator with acid
Rhinos, antelope,  have big pointed horns to attack the predators
gemsbok, buffalo
porcupine  spreads out and rattles its quills and stabs the predator
