Fire scenario & Design Report

• Reference: - NFPA 13-SBC.

• Project name: - Class VI storage warehouse.
• Owner: - --------------------
• Report No.: 01 • Date : 28/1/2023.

• Project: Housing materials / Appliances. • Address: Jeddah-KSA.

▪ Fire protection system is very important for life and property saving, and it must
be designed and installed according to a reference code or standard.
▪ Our case is a Housing materials / Appliances where sprinklers and hose system
are the primary type of protection with a new fire pump will be installed.
▪ The storage is the most hazard area and shall be calculated at this report.

❖ Summary

▪ Hydraulic calculation for fire protection system as sprinkler and hose system,
according to NFPA 13, and civil defense requirements.

❖ Objective

▪ Is to get the required flow rate and pressure for proper operation of the entire
system, at the correct pipe sizes.

❖ Methodology

▪ Achieve the objective goal through following method:

• Study the site plans and visit the site.
• Get the correct data about stored materials.
• Get the design parameters from NFPA 13.
• Assume some data.
• Put initial design for fire protection system.
• Assume a fire scenario.
• Perform hydraulic calculation.
• Finalize the fire protection design.
• The design is based on Ceiling and In-rack sprinklers.
• The software used for hydraulic calculations is: Elite 6.0.237
• Location: Store1 at the Mezzanine Floor.
❖ Stored material

▪ As supplied from the owner: Housing materials / Appliances Such as

(stoves, cooking utensils, Microwaves …etc.); bagged or cartooned.

Sprinkler Spacing
▪ According to NFPA the CMSA Sprinklers, protection area per sprinkler is 9 M2
and the maximum spacing is 3.7
▪ Sprinkler spacing = 3m x 3m
Calculations
❖ CMSA Sprinkler:
▪ No Operating sprinkler = 15
▪ Minimum Sprinkler Operating Pressure = 50 PSI
▪ Area Protected by sprinkler = 9 m2 (97 ft2)
▪ Flow of one sprinkler =

K x 𝑠𝑞𝑟𝑡(Minimum Sprinkler Operating Pressure)

= 11.2 x 𝑠𝑞𝑟𝑡(50) = 79 GPM.
▪ Spraying Density =

Flow of one sprinkler / Area Protected by sprinkler

= 79 / 97 = 0.81 GPM / ft2

❖ Fire scenario

✓ A fire starts in (Store 1) as it is considered the worst case, A 2.5-

inch FHC and 15 sprinklers in the ceiling (5 sprinkler in each branch)
expected will be calculated to control the fire ‫ ؛‬we need to confirm
that pump is able to provide the flow rate and pressure required to
control the fire.
✓ A flow of 500 GPM or more for FHC is considered enough as per
NFPA 13.

✓ A flow of 15 sprinklers in ceiling (4 sprinkler at each branch) is

considered enough as per NFPA 13.

✓ A flow of 8 sprinklers in-rack (at 1 level) is considered enough as

per NFPA 13.
❖ Final Report

▪ Using the design sheet and drawing.

▪ The following Hydraulic calculation report is performed.
▪ And the final result is a 2500 GPM at 174 PSI will be sufficient for
the system.

System Protection Area limitations

▪ According to NFPA 13:

❖ Store (1):

▪ The Total Approximate Protected Area = 7403 M2.

▪ The Number of Zones for Ceiling Network = Total area / Area for
one zone

= 7403 / 3720 = 1.99 = 2 Zone.

▪ The Number of Zones for In-rack Network = Total area / Area for
one zone

= 3029 / 3720 = 0.81 = 1 Zone.

❖ Store (2):

▪ The Total Approximate Protected Area = 3232 M2.

▪ The Number of Zones for Ceiling Network = Total area / Area

= 3232 / 3720 = 0.86 = 1 Zone.

▪ The Number of Zones for In-rack Network = Total area / Area

= 2362 / 3720 = 0.63 = 1 Zone.
