Practical 4.Print measure of Central Tendency using grouped and ungrouped data.
According to Professor Bowley, Averages are “Statistical constants which enables is to comprehend
in a single effort to significance of the whole.” The give us an idea about the concentration of the
values in the central part of the distribution. Plainly speaking, an average of a statistical series of the
value of the variable which is representative of the entire distribution.

• The following are the five measures of central tendency that are in common use:
1. Arithmetic Mean
2. Median
3. Mode
4. Geometric Mean
5. Harmonic Mean

• Requisites for an ideal Measure of central Tendency

• The following are the characteristics to be satisfied by an ideal measure of central tendency.
i. It should be rigidly defined.
ii. It should be readily comprehensible and easy to calculate.
iii. It should be based on all the observations.

Theory:

Median for grouped data

In the case of continuous frequency distribution, the class corresponding to the c.f. just greater than N/2 is
called the median class and the value of median is obtained by the following formula:
𝒏
−𝒄
𝒎𝒆𝒅𝒊𝒂𝒏 = 𝑳 + [𝟐𝒇 ] × 𝒉

Where,

L is the lower limit of the median class,

f is the frequency of the median class,

h is the magnitude of the median class,

'C' is cumulative frequency preceding to the median class, and N = Σfi

Mode for grouped data:

In case of continuous frequency distribution mode is given by the formula:

𝒇𝟏 − 𝒇𝟏
𝒎𝒐𝒅𝒆 = 𝑳 + ( )×𝒉
𝟐𝒇𝟏 − 𝒇𝟎 − 𝒇𝟐

Where, L is the lower limit of model class h the magnitude of the model class, fl is frequency of the modal
class, f0 and f2 are the frequencies of the classes preceding and succeeding to the modal class respectively.

Procedure:

1. Select data from the source.

2. Arrange data in excel sheet.

3. Use suitable formulas to calculate the median and mode for grouped data.

4. Verify the solution.
