Minor Discipline Programme

The Minor Discipline Programme allows high-performing students to pursue additional academic courses outside their major, requiring a minimum CPI of 8.0 and no F/Z grades. Students can apply for a minor after their fourth semester, with a total credit requirement of 36-44, and must choose from a limited number of seats based on their academic performance. Dropping a minor is permitted, but students cannot rejoin once dropped, and accumulating two backlogs in minor courses will result in discontinuation of the minor discipline.

Minor Discipline Programme

Purpose: Minor discipline courses provide an opportunity to learn another academic area ONLY for the
students doing very well in their major academic Programme without any F-grade/Z-grade. It is expected
to supplement learning in the major discipline and help in developing interdisciplinary knowledge for
problem solving in cutting edge areas of Engineering, Technology and Science. The minor allotment is
done after the 4th semester. The minor courses will run during Vth to VIIIth semesters (9-11 credits each
semester). The total credits requirement for Minor is 36-44.

Eligibility:
i. Minor discipline courses are additional learning over and above the regular B.Tech./IDD/B.Arch.
degree requirement. Students can opt for additional learning in a discipline other than his/her major
discipline. Students completing a minor discipline course will have the minor mentioned in the degree
certificate and in the final grade report.
ii. For the eligibility of minor discipline, the student must have completed all the credits requirements
for the first four semesters of their studies with a minimum CPI of 8.0. The student should not have any
F-grade or Z-grade during the first four semesters. It is expected that the students with very good
academic records, if interested, may take minor discipline.
iii. Opportunity to take Minor discipline is a privilege but NOT right.

Procedure:
i. Applications for a minor discipline course must be submitted by interested eligible students in the
prescribed form or through an online portal after the end of the fourth semester. Academic section will
make a suitable announcement for the same after the declaration of results of the fourth semester.
Interested eligible students may give their three choices of a minor discipline in the order of preference.
Change in choice of minor discipline course will NOT be considered after the application submission. No
change in minor discipline will be considered.
ii. The maximum number of minor course seats in a discipline will be ten (10). The selection for Minor
discipline shall strictly be based on CPI at the end of fourth semester. In case of tie, CPI after 3rd
semester will be considered. If the 3 rd semester CPI is also equal, 4th semester SPI will be considered.

Other Guidelines

Minor course structure

i. Departments/Schools offering minor discipline may propose a structure of the minor discipline course.
The minor discipline course structure shall have one course each semester during semester V to
semester VIII for B.Tech./IDD/B.Arch. students. The credit requirement for Minor discipline is 36-44. All
Departments/Schools are expected to propose four/five courses for minors in their related discipline.
Classes of Minor discipline students may be held with the students of the Department/School.
Dropping Minor discipline
i. However, a student may drop Minor discipline at any stage. Once a minor is dropped the student will
not be allowed to re-join the minor.
ii. If a student drops out from Minor discipline having earned any `F’ grade, he/she will still be eligible for
Institute medals/awards as per his/her academic performance in major degree programme. The
institute guidelines for the medals/awards will be applicable.
iii. If a student accumulates two backlogs (F-grade or Z-grade) in a minor discipline course at any stage
he/she is not allowed to continue the minor discipline. The student will be advised to focus on only
Major courses.
iv. A student with only minor courses remaining as backlogs but all degree requirements for Major
discipline are completed shall be deemed to have completed the B.Tech./IDD/B.Arch. programme and
he/she will be awarded a B.Tech./IDD/B.Arch. degree WITHOUT a minor. The student opted minor as
additional learning out of his/her own interest and the Minor discipline shall not delay his Major degree
award.

Note:
a) B.Arch. students can opt minor in Civil Engineering. Likewise, minor in Architecture will be
available only for Civil Engineering students.
b) IDD students of Department of Physics or Chemistry can opt for Minor only in Chemical
Engineering& Technology/Biochemical Engineering/Biomedical Engg/Ceramic
Engineering/Materials Science & Technology
c) The Minor guidelines will be applicable for B.Tech./IDD/B.Arch. students admitted in 2020-21
onwards.
