CHAPTER 3
1.) How can knowledge of computer hardware and software help nurses to
participate in information technology adoption decisions in the practice area?
Nurses who are familiar with computer hardware and software are more equipped to
choose effective devices and software for improved healthcare delivery, which makes
them more involved in IT adoption decisions. They are able to make well-informed
choices on how best to use IT in healthcare, which will enhance patient care and data
handling. It is essential to grasp the fundamental components and operations of a
computer in order to completely comprehend the workings of information technology. An
effective instrument is a computer. These instruments have intricate pieces with intricate
designs and uses. Without a thorough understanding of the hardware and software
components of a computer, one cannot properly utilise it. Computer proficiency is one of
the talents required in nursing informatics. A nurse cannot acquire informatics knowledge
and informatics skills without computer skills. According to the definition of computer
skills, selected computer skill competencies contain computerised searches and retrieving
patient demographics data, the use of telecommunication devices, the documentation of
patient care, the use of information technologies for improving nursing care, and the use
of networks and computer technology safely. A nurse cannot acquire the informatics
knowledge and abilities necessary to support other nurses in the practice area in making
decisions about the adoption of information technology if they are not proficient with
computers. And without having a thorough understanding of computer hardware and
software, one cannot fulfil the stated proficiency.
2.) How can new computer software help nurses engage in professional
development, collaboration, and knowledge, dissemination activities at their own
pace and leisure?
New computer software has become extensively utilised and is regarded as a very
valuable tool by all due to its ability to facilitate information transfer and ease the
burdensome tasks that face employers and students alike. Simply put, it means that work
related to research, typing, or filing important data that needs to be saved can be
completed quickly and easily. It also provides effective, precise, and, let's say, accurate
information that was gathered from various sources and references at a specific moment.
Since a computer has essentially all the knowledge accumulated from many thoughts, it
actually has a major will to deliver all the information we need. It constantly helps to
direct people, especially pupils. In the sense that our contemporary society has developed
highly elevated technology in such a way that it connects a particular group of people
who are farther away from each other, similar to using Facebook and other networking
sites, it always helps to excel knowledge and enhances collaboration to all people.
Through the usage of computer software, you can also impart some crucial information
and exchange ideas or knowledge with everyone. In theory, a computer can assist you
create new ideas by modelling existing ones.

1. How useful will accessing the World Wide Web be for your:
a) Scholarly Work?
Scholarly work, these can ensure them the continuity of information they can retrieved
from educational based information. In terms of health sciences particularly in nursing.
From highly complex things to very simple things, like door-to-door directions and maps,
the World Wide Web is valuable for all ages and purposes. It contains information from
all over the world. The Web's content can be helpful for academic study as well.
b) Nursing Practice?
Nursing practice, electronic literature has been a great help for us in researching existing
case studies/ field studies which can be implemented in our lives. Personally, I usually do
or read some researches using World Wide Web in NCBI (National Center for
Biotechnology Information) especially information related to my subject matter; NCBI is
a United Stated funded Organization in which they apply the electronic literature. They
usually add some researches, case studies, published book in the internet in the sense to
give benefit to other people, this is easier than ever; in just one click you can see or
browse related to your topic being presented.
c) Personal Interests?
In personal interest, this newly based approach could help us to be more efficient in our
task and gives us the opportunity open network based on our own taste or interest and to
practice more in handling the computer; thus, it gives us the ability to be more literate in
computer technology.
Although the world wide web and a spider web are very different in appearance, they are
comparable in that they both use the same method to connect all computers. Thus, the
world wide web was not formed by spiders. Instead, the concept of the internet might
never have come about if it weren't for the connections made by spider webs. No thought
is truly original; rather, it is a synthesis of prior understanding that fosters the growth of
new ideas.
It refers to any and all publicly accessible webpages or websites that users can access via
the internet on their local computers and other devices. Users can get further information
by clicking on connections connecting these pages and documents. This data may be
presented in text, picture, audio, or video formats, among others.

Email is a free tool, once you are online, there is no further expense that you need to
spend in order to send and receive messages. It is quick, once you have finished
composing a message, sending it is as simple as clicking a button. Email, especially if an
email system is integrated into the network, is sent, delivered, and read almost
immediately. It is easy to use. Once your account is set up, composing, sending, and
receiving messages is simple. Also, email allows for the easy and quick access of
information and contacts. It allows for easy referencing. Messages that have been sent
and received can be stored and searched through safely and easily. One of the email
advantages is that it is a lot easier to go through old email messages rather than old notes
written on paper. It is accessible from anywhere as long as you have an internet
connection. Whether or not you are in the office or on the field, or even overseas, you can
access your inbox and go through your messages. It is paperless and therefore, beneficial
for the planet. Not only can you reduce the costs of paper, you are actually reducing the
damage paper usage does to the environment. It allows for the mass sending of messages.
An effective medium to utilize to get your message out there, you can send one particular
message to several recipients all at once. It allows for instant access to information and
files. You can opt to send yourself files and keep messages so that you have a paper trail
of conversations and interactions you have online, just in case you may need them in the
future.

avoiding clicking on unknown links, and using strong passwords can help mitigate
security risks.
It is used for the convenience it offers for both patients and practitioners as it can be
written at any time of the day or night, potentially making it easier for those whose
circumstances might make it difficult for them to consult with healthcare professionals
during working hours. Those responding to the email can also do so in their own time,
giving them space to research any difficult questions or consult with colleagues.
However, because there will always be an element of time delay between sending an
email and receiving a reply, this is not an appropriate way of dealing with any queries
that are urgent or an emergency. Since email provides clients with a written response, it
allows them the opportunity of re-reading any information given. Numerous studies have
looked at patient satisfaction and information needs following medical consultations.
Hogbin and Fallowfield (1989) identified various reasons why patients may have unmet
needs following hospital appointments. These included lack of time, poor
communication skills by medical professionals and patients’ difficulty in remembering all
the information. It can be difficult to absorb large amounts of information during a face-
to-face consultation or phone call. Times of high emotional stress, such as receiving a
diagnosis or bad news, might further reduce people’s capacity to retain information.
Having an email to read in their own time and at their own pace may help patients to
better understand aspects of their diagnosis or treatment. The opportunity for email
contact may also allow patients to ask questions they may have forgotten or that only
occur to them later as information about their condition is gradually assimilated.
4. How could using e-mail benefit families and clients living with a chronic health
challenge?

1. Consider how using a professional portfolio will prepare you for future career
recruitment and finding the right job for you.
It can help me create a good first impression on potential employers and highlight my
qualifications and work history. A professional portfolio is a collection of examples and
evidence to showcase your experience, capability and potential for employment and
professional development. Professions that might require you to present a portfolio at
the recruitment stage include designers, product managers, developers, business

analysts and journalists but it can help you stand out to employers in other sectors as
well.
2. How does planning a portfolio help you to recognize your personal strengths and
learning needs?
It provides students with a means to demonstrate what they know and can do in a
comprehensive, integrated manner. The process of maintaining a personal portfolio over
the span of your education and future career is a vital and progressive one that can help
you to recognize, organize and showcase vital pieces of your personal, academic, and
career development. A portfolio also provides you with a place to gather evidence that
you have met a wide range of standards for both education and practice. This ability is
becoming very important with the widespread need for nurse competency assessment and
the continued need for lifelong learning and the development and maintenance of
employability skills.
3. Does setting personal goals for learning affect your view of your nursing
education? If so, how?
Yes, Academic goals direct nursing students' learning styles, concentrate their aims, and
impact their skill acquisition. however, there is a scarsity of study on academic
aspirations and associated factors. Nurses with clear career objectives may be more
motivated to continue their education, improve their skills or provide quality patient care.
MODULE 3

1. What health care and societal factors affect the quality of discharge teaching
within the hospital setting?
Numerous studies have demonstrated that hospital length of stay (LOS), readmission risk,
and mortality risk can all be considerably reduced with an early release planning
approach. Planning for discharge should therefore start as soon as feasible. Studies reveal
that it is frequently challenging to anticipate the day of discharge with accuracy, which
may account for the practice of conveying crucial information on that day and the
perception among patients and carers that the discharge process moves too quickly.
Healthcare providers could underestimate how much time it takes to explain discharge
guidelines to patients and how much they comprehend. In addition, healthcare
professionals and patients use different wording to describe health-related terms. All of
these factors can play a role in the patient’s ability to state their diagnosis, medication
name, indication, or side effects.Furthermore, discharge instructions oftentimes instruct
patients or caregivers to schedule follow-up appointments with their primary care
provider or specialty providers after discharge. However, up to half of the patients
instructed to make the appointment may not understand the reasons or mechanism for
doing so, and therefore do not make the appointment.
2. How can nurses create time and resources to ensure clients receive adequate
discharge planning and follow-up care in their homes?
A patient could need additional care from a different physician after receiving initial
treatment in a hospital or other facility. A discharge planning nurse assists in setting up
patient recommendations for these services, which could include physical therapy, home

health care, primary care, and more. During their hospital stay, the patient may not have
had direct interaction with discharge planning staff. In order to make sure that there is a
discharge plan and that everyone involved is aware of it, this nurse must collaborate
closely with the patient's physicians and other nurses. They also need to talk about these
plans with the patient's family, particularly if they have any part in the patient's ongoing
recovery. Family members frequently have to step in to assist when a patient needs
further care after being discharged. In these cases, it is the discharge planning nurse's
duty to instruct the patient's family on how to carry out a few easy but vital medical tasks.
This could be learning how to read a glucometer or how to properly bandage a wound.
Nurses ensures that the patient receives referrals for additional healthcare providers
whose services may be required after initial treatment is the responsibility of the
discharge nurse. Nurses must also make sure the patient has all the documents and
equipment they will require after being discharged during this period. Additionally, they
should confirm that the patient is aware of the scheduled follow-up appointments and
their location.
3. What kind of computer applications (for instance, NIS or HIS systems) could
facilitate discharge planning?
Nurses are expected to teach hospital clients and their families the physical and technical
aspect of the client’s care before the client is discharged. Due to time constraints and
heavy workloads, discharge preparation may be a challenge for most nurses to provide.
Effective discharge planning involves comprehensive and ongoing assessment, not only
of physical and psychological needs, but also of the availability of family caregivers, the
home environment, client and family resources, and the community resources available.
Because of shortened hospital stays, discharge planning must begin when the client is
first admitted to the hospital to ensure that adequate teaching, support, care, and services
are available before and after discharge. Printed instructions are important for reinforcing
the information given to the client. Computer-generated discharge summaries and
instructions can be used by nurses to provide individualized, legible discharge teaching,
tailored to each unique client. As well, post discharge information can be made available
in a web-based Internet environment for client updates and interaction.
Computers have revolutionized the way health care is delivered. Mobile hospital carts
with computers allow easy access to patient data and electronic medical records.
Computers also speed up the diagnosis and treatment process, improving health
outcomes. This allows doctors and nurses to provide better patient care while reducing
overhead costs.
