Dream Journey to Argentinian Patagonia

Patagonia for a long time was a dream destination for me. I finally managed to go there
this summer. While January is winter here, in the South it’s summer, the best season to
get to know all the places there. To save money, I opted to take indirect flights instead
of longer, more direct ones, which meant four separate flights with long waits in
between for almost 24 hours of total travel time. Remind me not to do that again!

El Gaucho Estancia. After an exhausting journey, I began my Patagonian adventure

at El Gaucho Estancia, with five days of horseback riding, gaucho-training and
backpacking. For the next three days, we rode through desert plateaus, deep mountain
canyons, alongside and through rivers and over rocky mountains. Each day’s ride was
different. The size of the estancia means a variety of landscapes and we were
continually surprised. Deep canyons gave way to high mesas; cool rivers led to fertile
fields, and always with the perfect snow-capped cone of Lanín volcano in the
background. On the last day, herding the cattle was extra fun.

El Calafate, El Chalten and Ushuaia. In Ushuaia, we had an unforgettable mini

trek to Los Glaciares National Park, to hike around Perito Moreno glacier and take in
incredible views of the largest glacier in the world. Only a few hours by car from El
Calafate, El Chalten was absolutely amazing, with spectacular scenery you can only
access by hiking. Ushuaia, the “City at the End of the World,” is about nature - a
magnificent place that is still relatively unspoiled by tourism. There is so much to do and
see. It was worthwhile spending a day around Tierra del Fuego National Park - superb
scenery, nature and some nice walks. On the last day, I ended the trip by taking a
cruise along the Beagle Channel to see penguins, sea lions and lots and lots of
scenery.
Despite the chaotic flights, it was a fantastic adventure, and now I’ve finally come
home.
