The Act ended British rule in India, declaring it an independent and sovereign state from August 15, 1947, and facilitated the partition into India and Pakistan. It abolished the viceroy's office, establishing a Governor-general for each dominion and removing British governmental responsibility. Additionally, it empowered the Constituent Assemblies of both dominions to create their own constitutions and legislate until those constitutions were enacted.
