Stage 5 Math

End Of Semester 1
Review Handout
Teacher David
Unit 1: The Number System
Unit 1.1: Understanding Place Value
Place Value in Decimals

● Each digit in a decimal number has a value depending on its position.

Example: In 3.57,
○ 3 is in the ones place → 3 ones
○ 5 is in the tenths place → 5/10 or 0.5
○ 7 is in the hundredths place → 7/100 or 0.07

Multiplying and Dividing by 10, 100, and 1000

● When multiplying: Move decimal point to the right.

Example:
2.5×10=25.0
2.5x100=250.0
2.5x1000=2500.0
● When dividing: Move decimal point to the left.
Example:
250÷10=25.0
250÷100=2.5
250÷1000=0.25

Compose and Decompose Numbers

● Compose: Combine smaller parts into one number.

Example: 0.5+0.07=0.570.5 + 0.07 = 0.570.5+0.07=0.57.
● Decompose: Break a number into smaller parts.
Example: 3.57=3+0.5+0.073.57 = 3 + 0.5 + 0.073.57=3+0.5+0.07.

Unit 1.2 Rounding Decimal Numbers

Round a number with one decimal place to the nearest whole number:

● If the decimal is 5 or more, round up.

● If the decimal is less than 5, round down.
Example:
● 4.6→54.6 \to 54.6→5
● 3.4→33.4 \to 33.4→3.

Unit 2: 2D Shapes and Patterns

Unit 2.1 Triangles
Types of Triangles:
● Equilateral: All sides are equal, all angles are 60°.
● Isosceles: Two sides are equal, two angles are the same.
● Scalene: All sides and angles are different.

Unit 2.2 Symmetry

A shape is symmetrical if it can be folded into two equal parts.
Lines of Symmetry: Divide a shape into two equal halves.
Example: A square has 4 lines of symmetry.
A tessellated pattern is simply a tiling that has a repeated pattern
of one or more shapes.

Unit 3: Numbers and Sequences

3.1 Counting and Sequences
Counting Beyond Zero

● Negative numbers are less than zero.

Example: −3,−2,−1,0,1,2,3-3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3−3,−2,−1,0,1,2,3.

Linear Sequences

● A pattern with a constant step size.

Example: 3,6,9,123, 6, 9, 123,6,9,12 (add 3 each time).

Unit 3.2 Square and Triangular Numbers

Square Numbers: The result of a number multiplied by itself.
Example: 4×4=164 \times 4 = 164×4=16.

Triangular Numbers: Numbers that can form a triangle.

Example: 1,3,6,10,151, 3, 6, 10, 151,3,6,10,15.
Unit 3.3 Prime and Composite Numbers
Prime Numbers: Have only two factors (1 and itself).
Example: 2,3,5,7,112, 3, 5, 7, 112,3,5,7,11.
Composite Numbers: Have more than two factors.
Example: 4,6,8,9,124, 6, 8, 9, 124,6,8,9,12

Unit 4: Averages
Unit 4.1 Mode and Median
Mode: The number that appears most often.
Example: In 1,2,2,3,4, the mode is 2

Median: The middle number when arranged in order.

Example: In 1,2,3,4,5, the median is 3
Unit 5: Addition and Subtraction
Unit 5.1: Addition and Subtraction with decimal
numbers
Add or subtract decimals with the same number of decimal places.
Example: 3.4+1.6=5.0.
Unit 5.2 Addition and Subtraction of Positive
and Negative numbers
Adding/Subtracting with negative numbers:
Example: −3+5=2.

Unit 6: 3D Shapes
Unit 6.1: Nets of Cubes and Drawing 3D Shapes
Net of a Cube: A flat shape that can be folded into a cube.
Unit 7: Fractions, Decimals and Percentages
Unit 7.1 Understanding Fractions
Fractions show part of a whole.
Example: ¾ means 3 out of 4 equal parts
Unit 7.2: Percentages, Decimals and Fractions
Percentages: Out of 100.
Example: 25%=25/100 = 0.25.
Unit 7.3: Equivalence and Comparison
Compare using >,<,=
Example:
0.5=12=50%.
0.25 > ⅕
11/20 < 60%
