What is computer?

The word computer is derived from the word compute that means to calculate.
Computer is an electronic machine use to solve different problems according to a set of
instructions given to it.computer can accept data and process data into useful information
and store it for later use.

The data and instructions given to computer is known as input .The input devices are used
to enter data and instructions into the computer . Different types of input devices are used
to input different types of data.some commonly used input devices are keyboard ,mouse
and microphone.

i. Keyboard:
A keyboard is an input device and is the most basic way for the user to

communicate with a computer. This device is patterned after its predecessor

the typewriter, form which the keyboard inherited its layout, although the

keys or letter are arranged to function as electronic switches.


Types of keyboard are as follow:

ii. Mouse:
The mouse is a small , movable device that lets you control a range of things
on a computer. Mouse is primarily used to move the cursor /pointer on the
screen.It is used to log in to a window , restart, shutdown, refresh, minimize
and all the pointer related tasks on a computer. Types of mouse are as
follows:

Mechanical

iii. Joystick:
A joystick sometimes called a flight stick. It is an input consisting of a stick
that pivotes on a base and reports its angle or direction to the device it is
controlling.

iv. Scanner:
Scanner is also called optical scanner. It is computer input device that uses a
light beam to scan codes, text, or graphics imagies directly into a computer or
computer system.A lever that can be moved in several directions to control the
movement of an image on a computer or similar display screen.

Output
The data processed into usefull information is called output. A hardware
component used to display information to the user is called output devices.
Different types of output devices are used to display different types of output.
Most commonly used output devices are monitor printer, and speaker.

i. Monitor:
The main output device of a computer that displays information in pictorial or
textual form. A discrete monitor comprises a visual display, support,
electronics, power supply,housing,electrical connectors,and external users
controls.

ii. Printer:
Printers are one of the common peripheral devices that can be classified
into two categories that are 2D and 3D printers. The 2D printers are used
to print text and graphics on a paper, and 3D printers are used to create
three dimensional physical objects.

iii.Sound card:
A device which can be stolled into a computer to allow the use of audio
components for multimedia applications .

iv.Headphone:
A pair of earphones joined by a band placed over the head for listening to
audio signals such as music or sound.
