Assignment2_FFT (Shashi_RK-02)

The assignment focuses on spectral analysis of a mechanical bell sound using Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). The audio was recorded in wav format at a sampling frequency of 16 kHz, revealing four prominent frequency peaks at approximately 925 Hz, 2400 Hz, 4400 Hz, and 7040 Hz, indicating the presence of multiple frequencies. The analysis confirms that the sampling frequency was adequate, with no aliasing effects observed.

Spectral Analysis of a Signal Using FFT

 Source of the audio signal used: Sound of mechanical bell that I used for
presentation time keeping at ICIEV conference.

Recording Device: Sony Xperia cell phone

Format & Sampling Frequency (Fs): wav format with Fs = 16 kHz

Duration: I recorded the sound for 5 second, but cropped the signal and took
48000 samples in MATLAB as the rest was only noise.

 Magnitude Spectrum after applying FFT:

The amplitude axis has been scaled down by a factor of N/2 (N  total number of
samples) and the frequency axis has been scaled down a factor of Fs/N to get the
proper amplitude and frequency information. And also the mirror part of the frequency
axis has been removed.
 Discussion:

The magnitude spectrum of the FFT of the signal shows four prominent local
maxima at around 925 Hz, 2400 Hz, 4400 Hz and 7040 Hz approximately. From this
it can be inferred that the ringing if a mechanical bell is not a single frequency tone
but it contains multiple frequencies within a narrow range (here the bandwidth is
approximately 6 kHz). The sampling frequency was sufficient enough for this simple
audio signal so it can be said that there was no aliasing effect.
