a) Power tool cleaning equipment

b) Dry abrasive blasting equipment
c) Air spray equipment
d) Airless spray equipment (if necessary)
d) Brushes
All the equipment shall be ready and checked as being in good within working order prior to and during blasting and
coating operations and shall be kept in a sufficiently clean condition to avoid surface and/or coating contamination.

5. SURFACE PREPARATION

The surface preparation shall be performed accordance with paint manufacturer’s instruction and project specification.
All fabrication works including cutting and drilling of holes shall be completed prior to surface preparation.

Prior to blast cleaning all the surfaces shall be free from any foreign matter such as weld flux, weld spatters, residue,
Slivers, oil, grease, sharp edge and rough shall be ground smoothed.

All the name plate, flange faces, and any other items and areas not being painted are must be protected from
mechanical damage as well as damage caused by grit during grit blasting, paint droppings and over spray.

PROCEDURE

Near white metal abrasive blasting shall be carried out as below:-

 SSPC-SP10 - Near White Metal / SA 2.5 /ISO-8501-1

This is by far the most effective method for removal of mill scale, rust and old coatings using abrasives such as
sand, grit or shot under high pressure.

Abrasive type and grade :-

Abrasive used in blast cleaning is complaint with ISO 11126-1 and ISO 11126-7
Abrasive type Substrate used Abrasive size
Copper Slag Carbon Steels 40-65 Microns

Abrasive for blast cleaning shall be permanently clean, dry, and free of any contaminant such as oil, Grease and
moisture.

6. AMBIENT CONDITION SURFACE PREPARATION AND APPLICATION OF PAINT

Surface preparation shall not be carried out as mentioned below:-

 In case of rain or bad weather, surface preparation carried out outdoors.

 When substrata are wet conditions.
 Air temperature shall not be less than 10°C.
 Surface temperature shall not be less than 5°C.
 Relative humidity shall not be more than 85%.

Painting shall not be carried out as mentioned below:-

 Surfaces shall not be painted during wet, damp or foggy weather.

 When the relative humidity is over 85%; when the metal surface temperature is less than 5°F (3° C) above the
dew point Paint shall not be applied.
 When extremely windy or dusty conditions exist. (greater than 15 Knots)
 Paint shall not be applied when the ambient temperature is expected to drop below 32°F (-0° C) before the
coating has had time to cure and conditions of insufficient lighting where available light is <500 lux.

7. MIXING AND APPLICATION OF PAINT

After the suraface preparation, the primer shall be applied within 4 hours to sundown of the same day or before any
bloom rusting occurs, In case of deterioration or rusting occurs the rust back area shall be re blasted.

a. Paint shall be protected from rain, condensation, contamination until dry to fullest extent practical.
b. Paint shall be mixed in accordance with manufacturer’s instruction and as per manual/specification.
c. Painting/coating shall be applied in accordance with the paint manufacturer’s instructions and this procedure.
d. Whether air spray, airless spray or brush each layer of paint shall be allowed to dry for a period of time within
the limits prescribed by the paint manufacturer, before the next layer is applied.
e. Area lighting shall be more than 500 Lux.
f. Painting shall be applied in uniform layer.
g. Stripe coating may be applied by brush edges, weld seams, corners and crevices.
h. Surfaces not accessible to spraying shall be painted by brushing.

8. REPAIR AND TOUCH UP PROCEDURE

Damaged painting area shall be removed by power tool extended over the surrounding sound coating for a minimum of
25 mm on all sides and a further 25 mm of sound paint and surface preparation shall be done as below.

 SSPC-SP-2 - Hand Tool Cleaning

This is by far the most effective method for removal of mill scale, rust and old coatings using abrasives such as
sand, grit or shot under high pressure.
 SSPC-SP3 - Power Tool Cleaning
Generally power tool cleaning is more effective and less laborious than hand tool cleaning for the removal of
loosely adhering mill scale, paint and rust. Power wire brushes, grinders, sanders and impact tools such as
needle guns are all commonly used.

The coating materials used for repair and maintenance shall be the same as the original materials
Repair works shall be in accordance with the specified painting system to restore the film thickness and shall cover the
prepared surface and the etched paint work.

9. INSPECTION AND TESTING METHOD

Surface Preparation:-

Blast cleaned surfaces shall be visually inspected to ensure the absence of all types of Imperfections and contaminants.
Cleanliness degree and surface profile shall be checked.

a. Visual Inspection shall be clean, dry, and free from oil/grease and have the specified roughness and cleanliness
until the first coat is applied.
b. Surface Profile shall be in the range of 45 to 55 Microns

Final Paint :-

a. Visual Inspection shall be carried out and shall be free from bubbles, blooming, orange peel runs, pinholes,
flooding, brush drags, dry overspray, bleeding, tackiness, bleaching, chalking, cracking, blistering, flaking,
delamination, dust inclusion, rust spotting, wrinkling as per standards ISO 4628-1 to 10 and be of a good visual
appearance.

b. DFT (Dry Film Thickness) shall be measured at random locations by using a calibrated coating thickness gauge
suitable for the given type of painting system and thickness range.

c. Final color shade shall be verified as per the requirement.
