“The Perfume”, a novel written by the German Patrick Süskind, is one

of the most exciting books I have read lately; not only because the
writer's pen moves between reason and passion, morality and ethics,
but also because of the author's interest in unraveling the meaning of
life.
The story is set in 18th century France, Grenouille is a man with no
human or bodily odor, but endowed with a keen sense of smell. He
has the gift of recognizing and creating scents that attract other
people. He works as an apprentice perfumer and traveled to Paris to
explore all available human scents. He wanted to have his own scent.
A scent that would give him the body odor that every person has that
he did not. His desire to be one of them led him to mix various
perfumes to find a human scent that would make him smell like
everyone else.
The central character of the play has a surprising behavior since,
Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, motivated by an ideal, throughout the plot,
is structuring a mechanism to achieve absolute control of the
perfume. With a remarkable gift of super smell and being odorless is
the only thing that piques his interest. This gift comes at a huge cost
as it drives him to search for the perfect perfume and it will cost him
other people's lives.
The words I would use to describe my experience reading this book
are fascination and compassion as the character possessed the power
stronger than the power of money, the power of terror or the power
of death: the invincible power to dominate the love of humanity, but
he did not have the power to secrete a scent of his own to be
recognized by other human beings, which plunged his whole life in a
terrible loneliness.
In conclusion, I definitely recommend that you read this work
because it tells a different story, almost unique. Excellent to pass the
time, for its lightness at the time of being read. Considering its
relatively small number of pages, the novel leaves no loose ends and
the life of Jean Baptiste Grenouille is told from beginning to end, it
left me satisfied.
