Assiut university 4th year power & machine section

Faculty of Engineering 2nd semester, 2017/2018

Elect.Dept.. Course of: Power System Control(EP427)
------------------------------------------------------------------
Sheet No 1
Please:
- Study hard, follow the lectures continuously and always keep in your mind “more practice leads to
less time and less effort in exam” .
- The sheet is self-solving.
- Expect quiz at any section so be wakeful.
------------------------------------------------------------------- -----

1) The cost of a (200 MW rating) generation unit is measured as follows:

25% of rating ……. 615 million BTU/h

40% of rating …….. 926.4 million BTU/h
100% of rating …….. 2280 million BTU/h …….
Cost of 1 million BTU= 2 $.

a) Find the cost equation as a function of Pg.

b) Find the fuel cost when 100% loaded … 50% loaded ….20% loaded
c) The incremental cost.
d) The fuel cost needed to deliver 51 MW.

(ans: f = 0.108Pg2 - 4.8Pg+1200 $/h , 4560$, 1800$,1180.8$, λ = 0.218Pg - 9.6 $/MWh, 1236.1 $/h)

--------------------------------------
2) The incremental fuel cost in $/MWh for 4 units of a plant are
λ1 = = 0.012 Pg1 + 9.0 λ2 = = 0.0096 Pg2 + 6.0
λ3 = = 0.008 Pg3 + 8.0 λ4 = = 0.0068 Pg4 + 10.0

Assuming that all four units operate to meet the total plant load of 80 MW, find the
incremental fuel cost λ of the plant and the required output of each unit for economic
dispatch.
(ans: 10.1 $/MWh, 92.4 ,428, 236.6, 16)

3) Assume that maximum load on each of the four unit described in prob. 2 is 200,
400, 270 and 300 MW; respectively; and that the maximum load on each unit is
50, 100, 80 and 110 MW; respectively. With these minimum and maximum
output limits, find the plant λ and MW output of each unit for each unit for
economic dispatch.
(ans: 9.8$/MWh, Pg1=67.33, Pg2 = 396.6 MW, Pg3 = 226MW, Pg4 = 110 MW)

----------------------------------------------------------------------

4) Solve prob. 3 when the minimum load on unit 4 is 50 MW rather than 110 MW.
(ans: 10.08$/MWh, Pg1= 90MW, Pg2 =260MW, Pg3 =400MW, Pg4 = 50MW)

-----------------------------------------------------
5) A two bus system is shown in Fig. 1:
The incremental fuel costs of the two generators are:
𝑑𝑓1
= 0.35Pg1 +0.4 $/MWh
𝑑𝑃𝑔1

𝑑𝑓2
= 0.35Pg2 +0.4 $/MWh
𝑑𝑃𝑔2

The power losses expression: PLoss = 0.001(Pg2 - 70)2 … Determine the optimal
scheduling (economic operation) and power loss of transmission system.

(ans: λ = 117$/MWh, Pg1 =218.8 MW, Pg2 =159MW )

With our best wishes.
