CHAPTER 3 : Present Continuous

A .The present continuous is formed with the present tense of the verb “to be” and the “-ing’’form of a
verb .

I + am

Formula : Subject He,She ,It + is +(to) Verbing + C

We ,You ,They + are

Examples : I am learning English

You are learning English
He /She/it is learning English
We are learning English

B-When to Use present Continuous

a)The present continuous is used for actions in progress at the time of speaking .
(Настоящее продолженное время используется для действий, которые находятся в процессе
выполнения в момент разговора.)
Example :I am washing my clothes
The group is singing a Christmas carol
She is sweeping the compound

b)It is also used for action that are underway(being done) and that will continue in the future .The
action is not usually in progress at the time of speaking ,but we often say “at the moment ”( Оно
также используется для действий, которые находятся в процессе выполнения и которые
будут продолжаться в будущем. Действие обычно не происходит в момент разговора, но мы
часто говорим «в данный момент».)

*The lecturer is writing a textbook at the moment .

*We’re painting the mansion at the moment

c)We use the present continuous with “always” to say that something happens too often .
( Мы используем настоящее продолженное время с "всегда", чтобы сказать, что что-то
происходит слишком часто.)

*She is always making me angry

*We are always getting it wrong
*The children are always playing in the room

d)It is used to talk about changes and trends . ( Настоящее продолженное время используется
для обсуждения изменений и тенденций)
 We often use words like : these days ,nowadays ,recently ,apparently,etc.

* Apparently ,the computer is not working .

*The rainfall pattern is changing these days .
*Nowadays ,people are becoming more concerned about environmental
degradation

 Justification: The present continuous is used to indicate an action that is currently developing.

 Justification: The present simple is used to describe a habitual behavior.
