Example Problems Set6
1. Determine the defelection at end B of the beam. The beam is clamped at A and supported on a
spring of stiffness k = 2 N/mm at B. The beam has a depth of 10 mm and width of 5 mm. Also
draw the bending moment and shear force diagrams. Assume E = 200 GPa. Use the method of
consistent deformations.
2. Determine the force in member CD of the truss. Assume same constant AE for all members. Use
the method of consistent deformations.
3. Draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams for the beam due to the loading shown and
support stellements (downwards) of 40 mm at C and 25 mm at E. Assume modulus of elasticity
E = 70 GPa, and I = 1,250 × 106 mm4. Use the method of consistent deformations.
4. Determine the forces in all members of the truss. Assume same constant AE for all members. Use
the method of consistent deformations.
5. The beam is supported by a fixed support at A and by a cable BD. Determine the tension in the
cable. The cross sectional properties of the cable and beam are given in the figure. Use
Castigliano’s theorem.
6. Draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams for the beam shown below. Use
Castigliano’s theorem.
7. Draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams for the frame. Assume same constant EI for
all members. Use the method of consistent deformations.
