I attended about 20 major courses throughout my career history from 2006 till now to broaden both my technical &
professional knowledge and IT skills. The courses included technical, commercial, management, and H&S courses.
The courses I attended included ETAP, SKM Tools, VFD, MV Motors,21st-century Management Program, Delivering
Effective Presentations, Technical Report Writing Skills, Commercial Awareness, and Leadership and Management
Skills. I have prepared and developed the complex power system equipment (short circuit/sag/relay setting and IEEE
& BSEN Earthing design) sizing calculations, which were beneficial for electrical graduates and assistant engineers.
Through in-company research and self-teaching, I gained a comprehensive understanding of electrical design for
thermal power plants, water, and rail industries. I attended regular vendor meetings such as SIEMENS, ALSTOM,
and ABB groups to broaden my knowledge of the Power Industries and become a valuable contributor at these
meetings. I have given various technical lectures on electrical equipment such as high-voltage Substation and
Railway Substation, Generators, and transformer protection at PSTI/NPTI (Power System Training Institute). With my
appetite to continuously learn and develop, I can confirm my outlook is in line with the industry's demand. (A1)
•I wrote a Paper on Arc Flash Evaluation on 1500V DC Electrified Railways for the ETAP Global Conference & Expo
2020 Call for Presentations. (B2)
• I have executed an Arc Flash Study Project for Nexus Rail, which is a brand-new area in the UK railway sector. The
major challenge for this project is that there are no BSEN standards to calculate incident energy from nexus electrical
networks. Based on my experience and understanding of the subject, I have calculated the incident energy from 11kV
and 415V systems and 1500V DC supply using IEEE standards to align the BSEN standards. Based on the
assessment, I have proposed various PPE equipment for the maintenance people. This project is a breakthrough for
Arcadis because it is the first time we have conducted this type of assessment for the UK Rail market and none of the
other companies do. I have faced a lot of challenges with this project in terms of the unavailability of updated
information on the present network. Since the Nexus networks have been constructed last 50 years before and for
this project Most of the existing protections on the 11kV system are electromechanical and thus have limited flexibility
in settings. Hence, relay coordination was quite challenging. Finally, I have successfully executed this project within
the agreed time and budget. The success factors for this project's completion are continuous and seamless
communication with all stakeholders, UK/GEC and Nexus. The client is delighted to engage Arcadis for future work.
(A2, B2)
• I have a good understanding of Arcadis' business needs for my region, and I developed my team skills in line with
the service deliverables for the UK requirements and met all standards and regulations. I made the team take
initiatives towards an innovation mindset to automate the regular design process for the typical deliverables of the E
& P projects to enhance the quality and efficiency, and I standardized the similar designs to ensure the quality of the
deliverables meets the clients. This helped me to maintain the quality and time and cost savings of the project. I
would like to inform you that most of the projects we have completed within the agreed time and budget have been
the result of regular follow-up meetings and project development plans. This project's success we have celebrated by

• I am leading a 20-member Railway Electrification and Plant team, which is unique to the UK railways as classified
by Network Rail. I have developed and maintained teams, always upskilling the knowledge to meet the industry
requirements. I monitored the progress and performance reviews of all the team members based on the schedule of
every monthly meeting. As part of leadership, I have mentored and developed two engineers in my team, and they
are ready to demonstrate the competencies for the next level. I have encouraged the UK team and my team here in
GEC to use the quest opportunity (Arcadis Deputation Program) to share the knowledge on both sides, and it was
successful. Almost all the team members in my team utilized the Quest UK Visit (one week). Every individual has
acquired learning knowledge from the UK, which they have shared with the wider team. I have developed and
implemented a training plan that includes new topics like modern and innovative technology in the industry for newly
joined graduates. I also had to arrange some special training for one of the graduates who was lacking in
presentation and teamwork skills. I identified this training need through the professional development plant. I would
like to inform you that in my team, all engineers have registered for IET membership. (C3)
• I am following and insisting on my team preparing the checklist aligned to my discipline (including SDC, IDC, and
the three-level checking process), which has produced excellent results and has been implemented by my team.I
discussed and agreed with the company's quality departments by the company procedures before signing on any
documents issued out to the client, and I regularly attended electrical meetings held by the Technical Director. I
always keep up to date with the latest changes in the industry and client design standards and ensure these changes
are incorporated into the documents I produce. I've also achieved all my project's desired output through the proper
design process to provide quality assurance and a robust checking process. Based on this checking process, the
project has benefited in terms of quality of deliverables as well as spending time on the checking process to reduce
the budget within the agreed cost of the project. I would like to inform you that I have attended every ISO 9000
external audit and it was a minor observation. (C4)
• I was deployed to the UK for 3 months. During my deputation, I have communicated with all levels of technical and
non-technical people, including attending client meetings with Network Rail. I am the single point of contact for all
projects in my discipline at GEC India. I have constantly communicated with the UK Lead office for Project Bidding
and Technical, Program, and Training. My company holds weekly business communication meetings to refresh and
recap the English-speaking skills. This program, which has run for the last six months, gives a lot of opportunities to
develop and progress in business communication. I effectively take an interest in many clients’ project reviews and
discussion meetings on various projects. I composed many technical reports, specialized technical evaluations, and
technical specifications for the project, which were acknowledged by numerous clients. (D1)
• My work philosophy is "One to All, All to One." At the same time, I will always ensure my colleagues’ work-life
balance. I would like to inform you that the rate of sick leave consumption within my team is very low, which indicates
that we have a good work-life balance. I have now reached a stage where all my discipline lead clients in the UK
know Shanmugam K by name. I always discuss my strengths and weaknesses with my line manager during my
annual appraisals, including improvements achieved during the year. I have been commended by all my managers
for my ability to integrate into the team and for my friendly, approachable, supportive, and easy-going nature. My
participation in the Technology Tree program allowed me to interact with primary school children and help them better
appreciate the future of engineering. Furthermore, I collaborate with the broader electrical team for knowledge
sharing, resource engagement, and learning. (D3)
• In everything I do, I adhere to five core values: People First, Client Success, Integrity, Collaboration, and
Sustainability, and I am pleased to confirm that I worked and conducted myself according to the company's policies
and framework. In my team, we have had zero attrition rate in the last five years thanks to developing good
relationships on all levels within the company and team. At Arcadis, we have an "Arcadis General Business
Principles" framework (AGBP), and I am pleased to report that I worked and conducted myself by the company's
rules and structure. (E1)
• I actively promote health and safety in my personal and design activities on a daily basis. Track (Think, Recognize,
Assess, Control, Keep) to 0 is one of my company's initiatives. I am aware of the TRACK to 0 apps, which are my
company's developed apps for safety. I proactively report any H&S issues via the Arcadis App. During the pandemic
and working from home conditions, I shared eye safety and mitigation techniques with all my organization's staff
about the insufficient light in our home. Also, I developed three fire marshals, and one first aider to go out there and
support the company's H & Steam. I am working on railway trackside high voltage and low voltage designs. I always
follow the TRACK to 0 principles and CDM regulations, which are an integral part of my design process. During the
design phases, I ensure potential hazards are identified and endeavor to reduce the risk as far as possible. (E2)

• I work mostly with trackside equipment (LV and HV) at Arcadis, so safety by design is a top priority. I trained my
team on how to prepare the HARA form and it will reduce and eliminate the risks during a later stage. To improve the
safety of COVID-19, I have been asked for the first time to provide all the design input requirements for the scope of
the project. This reduces the amount of time going for site surveys and reduces travel to the site in this pandemic
condition. which is the value addition I create for the client. (E2)
• I always discover ways to provide sustainable solutions to most of the projects I've executed in my career. Just to
provide one example, one of the Technical Community Meetings- Challenging the NR Standards to meet. I have
suggested light posts for walkway bollards made of GRP material instead of the usual lights made of steel or
aluminum material. This will necessitate the use of a CPC cable. However, with GRP material, CPC cable may not be
required, and we can save money and reduce our carbon footprint significantly by shortening the cable length and
using fewer civil foundation materials. In all my projects, one of the core values I have considered is sustainability.
Just to provide one example, I have optimized the sizing of primary equipment, which directly had an impact on the
overall size of the plant, and hence we could reduce our carbon footprint significantly. On my front, I walk to the office
daily and do not use any public transport or private vehicles. (E3)

Achievements: -
1. I took over the Team Lead position as a challenge after the resignation of my lead engineer from the E & P
(Electrification and Plant) Team. In that situation, the team member has very little exposure and even the skill level for
E & P in India itself is low. I have developed a team with help of my Deputation Experience in the UK. Now, I am well-
versed in the stages and have completed more than 50 projects in E & P Projects in the UK.
2. As part of learning and development, I have transformed from Power Sector into the Rail sector project. This helps
me to further grow myself in a different sector.
3. I was deputed to the Arcadis lead office in the UK for 3 months for the Point Heating /Signalling power system
study project. This power study consists of load flow, short-circuit, and discrimination studies using ETAP 14 for
traction signaling power.
4. Served various UK Rail and power clients- Network Rail/London Underground and London Overground
projects/Nexus Rail /UKPN/SPEN/SPR UK.
5. I secured an AEO competencies certificate in Australia as a Practitioner for designing High voltage and Low
voltage systems.
6. I have suggested cost-saving options for the UK Technical Community Meeting - Challenging the NR Standards.
GRP Bollard Lighting should be used instead of Steel Bollard Lighting. If we are using steel or aluminum Bollards, we
need to run a separate CPC cable for Bonding in Electrified Railway Area. But if we use GRP Bollards Lighting, we
do not need to use CPC and it saves huge amounts of money.
7. Successfully Completed New Railway Multidisciplinary Barking Riverside Project. The Total Rail length is 2.5KM.
This is a New Brown-Filed Project In the UK.
8. I have completed the Nexus Rail Arc flash study project, which is the very first time in the UK Rail environment,
and the client has given a 5/5 rating for this project, and based on this project experience, the client has given some
more projects.
9. I completed 220/132KV 800MW Wind Substation with 267MVAr Synchronous Condenser and Shunt Reactor
combination for the USA. Which to work for the Synchronous Condenser application.

10. For a bulk handling plant in Queensland, Australia, there was a requirement to enhance the conveyor load by
more than 40%. It would impact the electrical equipment’s load. For this requirement, I prepared a detailed design fee
estimation and deliverable list and completed the project within the time frame. The clients were appreciative of my
deliverable, which involved the preparation of a containerized substation layout as per Australian standard and a
power system study.
Career Highlight:-
While working as a Lead Electrical Engineer at M/s. Fichtner Consulting Engineers Pvt Ltd, I carried out an in-depth
technical assessment of the reducing LV cabling for Various power plant auxiliary. I identified an innovative design
solution and successfully demonstrated the reduction in LV cabling quantity for 415V 1 x 630sqmm cables. Originally,
the estimated cable length was circa 120 km. I prepared a technical evaluation to reduce the cable quantity and
workable for the project. To challenge this original proposal, I have studied and rearranged the power network
configuration from 415V to 11kV network reconfiguration. With this option, I have saved a lot of cabling and the cost
of the project. I am proud to inform you that the client has accepted this proposal and adopted this reconfiguration of
the power network from low voltage to medium voltage level, a network with satisfying requirements. This option has
reduced a lot of construction time and cost-saving by circa £30,000. (A2, E3)
I have designed a 25/400KV 3 X 245MVA Power transformer Yard layout (generator interconnected with Generator
Transformer through IPBD; the rating bus duct is 21000A) and this generator transformer interconnection with a
400KV switchyard. I have individually managed the different transformer vendor data and ensured the vendor met the
space requirement and the civil foundation loading requirement communicated with all. I would like to inform you that
there is no cross-disciplinary coordination (mechanical/civil and process) problem without fouling with other
equipment through continuous monitoring and data exchange between all the other engineering disciplines. I keep in
mind that this design is in line with good operation and maintainer practice, and I have ensured all safety regulations
were met. I am pleased to confirm there were zero incidents/ accidents at the site during installation and that this
design is the example for all other 600MW and 660MW power plants in my company. (A2)
I handled individually cable engineering for ultra-mega power projects. This includes cable sizing at various voltage
levels, estimating cable quantity, preparing, and floating tender specifications to reputable manufacturers, bid
evaluation, and vendor selection. The total estimated cable quantity is more than 1000KM, which includes
(HV/LV/Control/Signal Cables). To avoid the shortage of cable during the commissioning of the project. I proposed
ordering cable on a three-lot basis (50/50/20%) and standardizing cable size as per best engineering practice. I am
pleased to confirm that there was no shortage of cable during the commissioning of the project. I was appreciated by
the client. (B1, E3)
Secondly, I have prepared a key SLD that feeds power from the new power plant to the 400kV Pooling Substation. I
considered an optimum solution, compliant with the customer requirements and current regulations for Avantha (one
of India’s topmost power companies) Power for the new thermal power plant with a 400kV switchyard. The Power
Grid operator and client agreed to my proposed SLD and commissioned the site to successfully synchronize with the
400kV power grid without any disturbance. (B1)

High Reliable Unit Transformer Rating optimization using Fluid coupling for HT motor starting:-
I did a highly reliable Unit Transformer sizing optimization study. While working on the 1X 600MW Power project,
there were 25/11kV Unit transformers (Unit Transformer used to feed Power Plant auxiliaries) sized at 70MVA. The
size of the transformer arrived, considering the highest 12MW motor boiler Feed Pump feed from this transformer
and the starting current of this motor is about (1850A) starting with the DOL starter. Due to this large starting current,
the transformer size increased. At the 11kV voltage level, the transformer secondary current is calculated at around
4000A (Running Load + Highest Starting Motor Connected Load) without any margin.
For that, an 11kV 4000A circuit breaker is not available in the market. Due to this issue, the project got delayed. Then
the project manager assigned me to resolve the issue. I have analyzed various options to reduce the secondary side
of the current. I proposed three winding transformers of 70/35/35MVA instead of two winding transformers. For this
option, two 11kV switchboards are required, it is a little pricey at around £ 0.4m. Another option is using the fluid
coupling starting method. This option was selected due to largely reducing the motor starting current of 741A from
1850A. For this option, the motor does not directly couple with the pump and the transformer size is reduced to
55MVA. This proposal was technically accepted by all the parties and saved the project the cost of £0.2m. (B2, E3)
To speed up the project execution, I designed the Essential DC Control Supply with optimism and high reliability. One
of the power projects that I executed was the DC Auxiliary control supply planned for the 11kV circuit breaker of the
raw water pump house feed on the main plant building DC system. 2 km away from the raw water pumphouse, the
control cable size arrived for this was approximately 240 sq. mm, which is required to satisfy the voltage drop criteria.
The option is costly and not feasible to terminate the control supply terminal into the switchboard. To reduce the cable
size, time, and cost, I have proposed using Powerpack, which is the new product breaker control supply for the
breakers. The client is also satisfied with using this product and getting the pumphouse 11KV board commissioned
using Powerpack. This method has improved plant sustainability by reducing materials like cable and construction
materials for cable trenches. (B3, E3)
I managed a highly critical commissioning schedule to meet the major milestone to avoid penalties. For one of the
project experiences, there was a Boiler Black Start-up planned. This was a significant milestone in the power plant's
construction to test the boiler operation. The client agreed to a date with the statuary body of government. During the
boiler black start-up time, there is a power requirement for the Boiler Filling Pump (BFP). The rating of the motor is
200KW, and the pump was originally planned to feed power from the main plant LV Switch Board, but it was not
installed at the time. The site engineer requested that we provide a solution to an alternate power supply for that
pump. I went to the site and analyzed alternative power options for that load. By that time, the water treatment plant
(this is one of the power plant's auxiliary plants) was fully commissioned with all power distribution systems for that
plant.
I checked the spare feeder availability and technical feasibility of that power supply for the BFP supply from the WTP
Switch Board. But the commissioned WTP switchboard had a 160 KW motor feeder only. Further, I discussed with
the mechanical discipline the actual loading of that pump and the diversity factor of the pump and got information that
it is loading at 50% during the boiler Strat uptime. Then finally, I discussed with the WTP vendor and proposed
feeding BFP from their switchboard with suitable technical assurance without affecting their items during this load
operation. I would like to inform you that the Boiler Start-up has been done as per the planned date without any major
risk and to avoid the huge penalty from the government for this plant. (C1)
Project Management:-
I managed 18000 man-hours worth of projects. This includes managing the design time, internal and external
meetings, vendor drawing review, and approval process. To manage these hours, I have planned a meeting every
week with the Program Manager to discuss the progress of construction at the site. Based on the site requirement, I
had a regular follow-up with all the vendors to expedite the delivery of the equipment and design progress of other
deliverables. In addition to this, I went site every two months to attend the project progress meeting with all the
equipment vendors, owners' representatives, and subcontractors to discuss the progress of each project deliverable
in line with the project program.
Additionally, I must also inform the management of the project's progress and any loopholes that may hinder it, record
all the minutes of the meeting from the electrical side, and discuss with the team to carry out the next design stages.

feasibility study for the commissioning of BTG and BOP Detailed Design and Owners Engineering services. The
project's duration is almost 3 years. This 600MW Project BTG is a first-time BHEL manufacturing facility in India.
3. I have been involved in 765/400/100kV Short Circuit Testing Substation in NHPTL Bina. The testing substation can
have the facility to test up to 765 kV with a 63 kA fault current rating for testing electrical equipment. Previously, India
had a test facility up to 40 kA only. Now India has a facility of up to 63 kA within the country.
4. I have individually Performed Load Flow, Short Circuit, relay Coordination for Fixing Electrical parameters for large-
scale power plant projects. The highest calculated current for the isolated phase bus duct, which connects the
generator to the generator transformer, the fault level current is around 645 kA.
5. I have suggested using a data concentrator for interfacing between the Switchgear room and DCS room. From this
option, numerous cables interconnecting between Switchgear Room and Control room reduced, and only a few
cables are run between these rooms for Switchgear control and monitoring. Because the distance between
