Lesson Plan: Parts of a Computer

Grade: 1
Strand: The Computer System
Sub-strand: Parts of a Computer
Duration: 35 minutes

Lesson Objectives:

By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

1. Identify and name the basic parts of a computer.


2. Describe the basic functions of each part.

Materials Needed:

 Pictures of a computer and its parts (monitor, keyboard, mouse, CPU, speakers,
printer)
 Flashcards with names of computer parts
 A real computer or a model (if available)
 Chalkboard/whiteboard and markers

Lesson Development:

1. Introduction (5 minutes):
o Begin with a fun song or rhyme about computers and their parts to grab
the pupils' attention.
o Show a picture of a computer and ask pupils to guess the names of the
parts they know.
2. Lesson Presentation (15 minutes):
o Monitor: Show a picture of a monitor. Explain that it looks like a TV
screen and shows us pictures and videos.
o Keyboard: Show a picture of a keyboard. Explain that it has many
buttons called keys, which we use to type letters and numbers.
o Mouse: Show a picture of a mouse. Explain that it is a small device we
move with our hand to point and click on the computer screen.
o CPU (Central Processing Unit): Show a picture of the CPU. Explain that
it is the brain of the computer, processing information and making the
computer work.
o Speakers: Show a picture of speakers. Explain that they make sound so
we can hear music and other audio.
o Printer: Show a picture of a printer. Explain that it makes copies of what
is on the computer screen onto paper.
3. Class Activity (10 minutes):
o Distribute flashcards with names of computer parts to the pupils.
o Ask pupils to match the flashcards with the correct pictures of computer
parts.
o Discuss the function of each part as they match them.
4. Conclusion (5 minutes):
o Recap the parts of the computer and their functions.
o Ask a few questions to reinforce learning:
 What part of the computer looks like a TV screen? (Monitor)
 Which part of the computer do we use to type letters and numbers?
(Keyboard)
 What is the brain of the computer called? (CPU)
o End with a short, fun quiz or game to review the lesson.

Assessment:

 Observe pupils during the class activity to ensure they can correctly identify and
match the parts of a computer.
 Ask oral questions to check their understanding of the functions of each part.

Homework:

 Draw and label the parts of a computer in their exercise books.
