Timber_Roof_Self_Weight_Calculation

The document details the self-weight calculation of a timber roof structure for a biology lab, with dimensions of 33m by 10m. It provides calculations for the mass of rafters, struts, and purlins, resulting in a total self-weight of 25.592 kg/m², which converts to 0.251 kN/m². The calculations include assumptions about timber density and dimensions for various structural components.

Self-Weight Calculation of Existing

Timber Roof Structure at Biology Lab

Roof dimensions: 33m (length) × 10m (width) = 330 m²
Timber density assumed: 600 kg/m³
Rafter section: 200mm × 50mm
Rafter spacing: 1300mm c/c
Rafter length assumed: (10+10.8+2) =22.8m
Purlin section: 50mm × 50mm
Purlin spacing: 60mm c/c
Strut section: 100mm × 50mm
Strut spacing: 1000mm along each rafter

1. Rafters
Volume per meter of rafter = 0.2m × 0.05m = 0.01 m²
Rafter spacing = 1.3m
Number of rafters = 33/1.3 =26Nos.
Volume per of rafters= 26 x (10.8+2+10) x 0.01 = 5.928 m³
Mass of rafters framework= 5.928 × 600 = 3556.8 kg
Mass of rafters per m2 = 10.78 kg/m²

2. Struts
Volume per meter of strut = 0.1m × 0.05m = 0.005 m²
Number of vertical struts per rafter = 8 struts average length 1m
Number of diagonal struts per rafter = 8 struts average length 1.4m
Total length of struts = (8x1x26) +(8x1.4x26) =499.2m
Total strut volume = (499.2 × 0.005) = 2.496 m³
Mass = 2.496 × 600 = 1497.6 kg
Mass of struts per m2 = 4.5 kg/m²

3. Purlins
Volume per meter of purlin = 0.05m × 0.05m = 0.0025 m²
Purlin spacing = 0.06m → 20 purlins per triangle rafter each of length 33m
Volume = 0.0025 × 33 x 20 = 1.65 m³
Mass = 1.65× 600 = 990 kg
Mass of purlins per m2 = 3 kg/m²
Total Self-weight
Rafters: 10.78 kg/m²
Struts: 4.5 kg/m²
Purlins: 3.0 kg/m²
Total = 18.28 kg/m² add factor for joinery and connection =1.4 x 18.28 = 25.592 kg/m²
Convert to kN/m² = 25.592 × 9.81 = 251.06 N/m² = 0.251 kN/m²
