CO4 Remember the concept of probability to evaluate K2, K4, K5
probability distributions
Q.1: A candidate is called for an interview by three companies. For the first company, there are 12
candidates and for the second, there are 15 candidates and for the third, there are 10 candidates.
What are the chances of his getting at least one of the companies?
Q.2: A manufacturer of cotter pins knows that 5% of his product is defective. if he sales cotter
pins in boxes of 100 and guarantees that more than 10 pins will be defective what is the
approximate probability that a box will fell to meet the guaranteed quality.
Q.3: Fit a Binomial Probability distribution to the following data and calculate theoretical
frequencies:
x 0 1 2 3 4 5
f 38 144 342 287 164 25
Q.6: In a sample of 1000 cases, the mean of a certain test is 14 and S. D is 2.5. Assuming that
distribution to be normal, Find how many students score:
i) between 12 and 15.
ii) above 18.
iii) below 8. (Given : f(0.8)=0.2881, f(0.4) =0.1554, f(1.6)= 0.4452, f(2.4) = 0.4918).
Q.7: The distribution of the number of road accident per day in a city is Poisson with mean 4.
Find number of days out of 100 days when there will be
i) no accidents
ii) 4 accidents
iii) more than 7 accidents.
Q.8: Assume that the test scores from a college admissions test are normally distributed with a
mean of 450 and a variance of 10000.
a) What percentage of the people taking the test score are between 400 and 500?
b) Suppose someone received a score of 630. What percentage of the people taking the test score
better? What percentage score worse?
c) If a particular university will not admit anyone scoring below 480, what percentage of the
persons taking the test would be acceptable to the university?
