sorting materials in to groups

The document discusses the importance of grouping materials based on their similarities and properties, which aids in understanding and organizing them. It explains various types of materials, their properties including appearance, state, hardness, solubility, transparency, and density. The document also categorizes matter into solids, liquids, and gases, along with examples of each type.

Sorting Materials in to Groups By : Nawaz Sir

Grouping : The systematic arrangement of things based on similarities is called
as grouping.

Why grouping is Important :

 Grouping is important because without a proper grouping it would be very
difficult to keep things together.
 Grouping enables us to understand the properties of the materials in a
better way.
Different types of materials around us :
 There are verity types of objects around us which are made up of different
materials.
 Objects can be different size ,shape and colour for Ex : Tables, books, chair
Etc.
Matter :Anything around us which has mass and occupies space is called as
matter.
Properties of Matter: A material is used to make an object based on the
properties of matter.
For Ex : Aluminium is used to make aeroplanes as it is light in weight.
Properties of materials : There are different types of properties of materials
based on Their.

1)Appearance 2)State 3)Hardness 4)Solubility in 5)Transparency 6)Density

water
Appearance : All Visual Phenomena that characterize object, Such as colour ,
texture is called as appearance.
Types of Appearance :
 Lustre(Shine) : an object can be identified by luster or non lustre Ex: gold
is shiny and wood is not shiny
 Texture : The feel, appearance of an object is called as texture
Ex: Bark of tree is rough and petals of flower are soft
State : The state of matter also help in identify the object.
Types of states : There are 3 states of matter
 Solid :
a) Solid have definite shape and volume
b) In solids molecules are very tightly packed.
c) The inter molecular attraction between the particles is very
strong
d) That is why the solids are hard to touch.
 Liquid :
a) Liquids have definite volume but no shape
b) In liquids , the molecules are loosely packed.
c) The intermolecular attraction between the particles is not
strong
d) That is why the molecules of liquid can flow and slide
 Gases :
a) Gases neither have definite shape nor volume.
b) In gases, the molecules are very loosely packed.
c) The inter molecular attraction is very very less.
d) That is why gases are in constant motion
Hardness : The Quality of being Hard is called as Hardness
Hard : The materials that cannot be compressed are hard.Ex : Stone ,Rock
Soft : The materials that can be compressed are soft. Ex: Sponge
Solubility : The property of substance to dissolve in a solvent to form a
saturated solution under specific conditions of temperature and pressure is
called Solubility
Soluble: The substance ,which dissolve when mixed in water are called as
soluble in water Ex: Water and Salt
Insoluble : The substance , which do not dissolve in water are called as
Insoluble Ex: Water and chalk
Solubility of Liquids from liquids :
Miscible : When two liquid mix together is called as miscible. Ex: Water and
milk
Immiscible : When Two liquid do not mix with each other is called as
Immiscible
Transparency :
Transparent :Objects that allow light to pass through it called as
transparent.Ex: Glass,air,Pure water

Translucent :The objects that allow light to pass partially called translucent Ex:
oil paper,paper,sheet of plastic

Opaque : The objects that do not allow light to pass through it called as
opaque Ex: Wood,Metal,Etc

Density : Mass per unit volume is called as density.

Float : The object which have less density they float Ex :
Wood,Thermacoal,Empty water bottle

Sink : The object which have high density they sink Ex: Stone, Nail Etc
