Lesson Plan_ Hydrocarbons - Alkanes

This lesson plan focuses on teaching AS Level students about hydrocarbons, specifically alkanes, within a 30-minute timeframe. Students will learn about the production, combustion, and free radical substitution reactions of alkanes through discussions and slide presentations. The lesson includes a recap, Q&A session, and assessment through an exit question and homework assignment.

Lesson Plan: Hydrocarbons - Alkanes (30 minutes)

Grade Level: AS Level

Topic: Hydrocarbons – Alkanes
Duration: 30 minutes

Lesson Objectives:

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

● Understand the production of alkanes (hydrogenation & cracking).

● Explain the combustion of alkanes (complete & incomplete).
● Describe free radical substitution reactions in alkanes.

Lesson Structure:

1️⃣ Introduction (5 minutes)

● Begin by asking students:

“What are hydrocarbons, and why are they important in chemistry and industry?”
● Display Slide 1: Definition of Hydrocarbons and discuss briefly.

2️⃣ Explanation & Discussion (15 minutes)

🔹 Producing Alkanes (5 minutes)

● Use Slides on Hydrogenation & Cracking to explain:
○ How alkanes are formed from addition reactions of alkenes.
○ The process of cracking crude oil to produce smaller hydrocarbons.
○ Real-life applications (e.g., fuel production).
● Ask students: “Why is a catalyst required in these processes?”

🔹 Combustion of Alkanes (5 minutes)

● Use Slides on Combustion Reactions to explain:
○ Complete combustion (products: CO₂ & H₂O).
○ Incomplete combustion (products: CO, soot, and lower energy yield).
● Quick question: “Why is incomplete combustion dangerous?”

🔹 Free Radical Substitution (5 minutes)

● Use Slides on Free Radical Substitution to explain:
○ The three steps (Initiation, Propagation, Termination).
○ The role of UV light in forming radicals.
● Quick activity: Ask students to predict the products of a substitution reaction (e.g.,
methane + chlorine).

3️⃣ Quick Recap & Q&A (5 minutes)

● Review the key points with a one-slide summary.

● Ask students to summarize one concept in their own words.
● Address any questions before concluding.

Assessment & Follow-Up:

● Exit Question: “How does free radical substitution differ from addition reactions?”
● Homework: Past paper question on alkane reactions (to be discussed in the next
class).
