Mathematics
Quarter 2, Week 4- Module 4
Multiplication of Decimals
Target

Mathematics involves quantifying different objects in an accurate and

precise manner. In order to do this, whole numbers are not enough. We have to
consider the value of a part of the whole number.

The term decimal is derived from the Latin word decimus which means
tenth. This implies that decimals have 10 as its base. For example, if one is
divided into 10 equal parts, each part is 1/10 or one-tenth. The decimal
counterpart for this is 0.1, where 0.1 is less than 1.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

• Multiplies decimals up to 2 decimal places by 1- to 2 – digit whole
numbers. (M5NS-IId-111.1)
• Multiplies decimals with factors up to 2 decimal places. (M5NS-IId-111.2)
• Estimates the products of decimal numbers with reasonable results.
(M5NS-IIe-112)
• Solves routine and non-routine problems involving multiplication with or
without addition or subtraction of decimals and whole numbers including
money using appropriate problem solving strategies and tools.
(M5NS-IIe-113.1)
Lesson 1: Multiplies decimals up to 2 decimal places by 1 to 2 –
digit whole numbers

Lesson 2: Multiplies decimals with factors up to 2 decimal

places.

Select your answer in the answer cards.

1. Round 3.89 to the nearest tenths. A 3.9

2. Round 4.65 to the nearest whole number. B 6
3. Estimate the product of 1.93 and 2.65. C 5
4. Estimate the product of 1.99 and 0.72 D 3.8
E 2
5. Round 0.82 to the nearest whole number.
F 1

Discover

To estimate is to find a value that is close enough to the right answer. It means
that when you estimate, you are not getting the exact answers.

To estimate the product of decimal numbers you need first to round the decimal
number to the nearest whole number before multiplying.

Example 1. Estimate the product of 8.35 and 2.6

Step 1. Round 8.35 to the nearest whole number.

Since the number after the decimal point is less than 5 then 8 will remain.
Therefore, 8.35 rounded to the nearest whole number is 8

Step 2 Round 2.6 to the nearest whole number. Since the number after the decimal
point is more than 5 then 2 will be rounded up to 3.

Therefore, 2.6 rounded to the nearest whole number is 3

Step 3. Multiply the rounded decimal factors

8.35 → 8
2.6 → x 3
-----
24 → estimated product

The estimated product of 8.35 and 2.6 is 24. Check by computing the actual product.

8.35
x 2.6
------
5010
+1670
--------
21.710 → Actual Product

If you round 21.710 to the nearest whole number is equal to 22. The estimated
product 24 is close to the actual product.

Practice
Estimate the product. The first one is done for you as you guide then compute for the
actual product.
