Survival Strategy
by Michael O. Mejia
Pamela: Hey, Mark! Did you know that the Philippines is blessed with lots of
different plants and animals which is necessary for the ecosystem’s
survival?
Mark: Really? Why is that important?
Pamela: Well, if the climate changes or new things happen, some plants and
animals here can handle it better than others.
Mark: Oh, is it like how some Ylang-Ylang trees can survive typhoons or how
some “baboy ramo” can adapt to changing weather?
Pamela: Exactly! If only one type of plant or animal is present, and it can't handle
the change, it might not do well.
Mark: So, having many kinds is like a safety net for our plants and animals?
Pamela: Yes! If one can't make it, others might, and that helps everything stay
balanced in our beautiful Philippines.
Mark: That's fascinating! So, greater diversity in living things leads to greater
stability. Right, Pamela?
Pamela: Absolutely, Mark! More diversity means better chances of survival.
Diversity ensures natural sustainability for all life forms where everyone
plays a role in keeping things thriving.
As the teacher signals for their attention, Mark and Pamela ready
themselves for the class discussion. Their simple talk about life diversity leaves
them with a shared sense of awe for nature’s survival strategy. With a newfound
appreciation, they look forward to learning more about the various flora and
fauna that surround their everyday life.
