About PHFI and IIPHs

Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI)

PHFI is a public private initiative that has collaboratively evolved through consultations with multiple
constituencies including Indian and international academia, state and central governments, multi & bi-lateral
agencies and civil society groups. The PHFI focuses on broad dimensions of public health that encompass
promotive and preventive health related services in India. In the past fifteen years PHFI has made significant
progress in several areas impacting the public health. One of the core mandates of PHFI is to institutionalize
public health by creating Indian Institutes of Public Health (IIPH) across the country.

Indian Institutes of Public Health (IIPHs)

Five interlinked Indian Institutes of Public Health have been launched and operationalized till date under the
aegis of Public Health PHFI of India. The IIPHs are envisioned as the hub of teaching, research, sharing,
knowledge and experience in the evolving discourse of public health. These institutes are expected to become
nodal points for public health education, advocacy, research and practice in the future, providing quality public
health training to graduates from different disciplines.

The academic programs offered through the IIPHs are an attempt to respond to the existing need and demand
of trained manpower in different disciplines of public health. The aim of these programs at each IIPH is to
make education and research activities relevant to India in content and context, while attaining standards that
are qualitatively comparable with the best in the world. The IIPHs have launched Masters in Public Health
(MPH) and Post Graduate Diploma programs for fresh graduates as well as mid-career professionals, aiming
to improve the public health delivery system in India.

IIPHs is in close association with the state governments and plans to conduct research relevant to the state
and surrounding regions, to contribute to overall national health goals.

eCourse on Career Development in Public Health

How to manage your study

Online eLearning is very much different from any other learning experience you have had before. Unlike
studying in a typical classroom environment, which provides a rigid structure of lectures and seminars, here,
it is up to you how to organize your study. Though the materials help you in getting started and guide you
through the course, you need to plan your study on your own and to decide how fast you want to proceed.
There is a need to develop a self-commitment and self-discipline to create a habit of regular study.

Self-motivation is the key

Self-motivation is a pre-requisite in any online learning course. Unlike traditional courses in which the
students and instructor meet face-to-face once or several times a week, most learning activities and
communication in distance courses are asynchronous, meaning that class members participate and complete
their assignments at different times throughout the day or week. This arrangement can allow you to do class
work when it’s most convenient for you. However, with this increased freedom and flexibility comes
responsibility. It will be up to you to motivate yourself to keep up with assignments. It may be helpful, if you
identify some short- and long-term goals to aim for during your study. You may write down some points
as your progress update in your notes and review these as you progress through the course.

Practice self-discipline
Another characteristic shared by successful online learners is self-discipline. This characteristic is usually seen
in the learner’s ability to stay current with class assignments, participate on a regular basis in online
interactions, and develop and adhere to a schedule for class activities.

Time management is really important

A well-organized student is the most successful, therefore you need to plan and manage your time and
schedule so as to get the most out of your study time. Online classes require as much time and effort as
instructor-led classes, if not more. Develop a schedule and stick to it. Set aside a significant amount of time
each week for class work as well as one hour group interaction for the course.

Adopt flexible learning strategies

Usually it takes time, when it comes to beginning of the course, because of unfamiliarity with the contents
and t h e teaching modalities of the course, but as soon as you have developed an understanding of the
basic concepts and are familiarized with the technical aspects, you will find the course easier to follow.

An advantage of any eLearning course is that it allows you to study at your own pace, place and time. It
gives you the flexibility of having your own preferred approaches to new material and your own preferred
style of learning. Assessing your skills and preferences will help you select the type of learning strategies
that are most likely to keep you interested and help you reach your learning goals.
