Action
The IBPYP aims to create a curriculum that is engaging,
relevant, challenging and significant for learners in the
3–12 age range.

Transdisciplinary in nature
Conceptually driven
Inquiry based
Engaging - Of interest to the students, and involving them actively in their own
learning.
Relevant - Linked to the student’ prior knowledge and experience, and current
circumstances, and therefore placing learning in a context connected to the lives of the
students.
Challenging - Extending the prior knowledge and experience of the students to
increase their competencies and understanding.
Significant - Contributing to an understanding of the transdisciplinary nature of the
theme, and therefore to an understanding of commonality of human experiences.
Six Transdisciplinary Themes
Six transdisciplinary themes of global significance provide the framework for
exploration and study:
● who we are
● where we are in place and time
● how we express ourselves
● how the world works
● how we organize ourselves
● sharing the planet.
Realizing the IB Mission Statement
Promoting International Mindedness
How does it Happen?

Through Transdisciplinary themes

Through the Learner Profile

Through Action

Through SDG Goals

The six themes provide guidance for what students will inquire into. They:
● encapsulate our shared commonalities
● indicate the complexity and the connectedness of the human condition globally
● invite students to engage in dialogues about real issues in the world
● allow for authentic embeddedness of subject areas
● contribute to the uniqueness of the PYP
