Colossians 3:15-17 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which
16
also you were called in one body; and be thankful. Let the word of Christ

dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in

psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the
17
Lord. And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord

Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him."

All humans are prone to be selfish, proud, and arrogant. This leads us to have

ungrateful hearts. The Bible commands gratitude because thankfulness is

necessary for us to be right with God and to grow in all the ways that God

intends. Thankfulness is commanded because it does not come naturally to

us to have an attitude of gratitude.

Thanksgiving would be a lot easier if we only knew how blessed we are –

even when circumstances aren’t necessarily to our liking. Thankfulness has a

lot to do with what we avoid and not just the blessings that are easy to

recognize.

The ability to give thanks with a joyful heart begins with recognizing God as the

source of all good things and that God is always faithful toward his children.

Thank God for waking up every day, for letting you have the ability to get

through each day. When we replace our attitude with one that is thankful, we are

then kinder to others and kinder to ourselves.

Thanksgiving isn’t a spontaneous emotion but an intentional act of faith.

Habakkuk 3:17-18 Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on

the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though
18
there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in

the LORD, I will be joyful in God my Savior. This verse teaches us that

thanksgiving is a decision we make.

Philippians 4:7 - And the peace of God, which transcends all

understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. This

verse teaches us that thanksgiving immunizes our hearts and minds in

Christ Jesus against circumstances that also nourish our faith.

Romans 1:21 is perhaps the most intriguing and convicting statement on

thanksgiving in all the Scriptures. For although they knew God, they did not

honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their

thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.

A failure to honor God as Creator and to thank him for his good gifts

disables us spiritually and morally. Thus, we could call thanklessness a root

sin.

In Psalm 69:30 David resolves,

I will praise the name of God with a song; I will magnify him with thanksgiving.
So thanksgiving magnifies God: it makes him great in the sense of

declaring his greatness.
