ADVANCED SI AND CI

1.A borrowed ₹2,500 from B at 12% per annum compound interest. After 2 years, A
gave ₹2,936 and a watch to B to clear the account. Find the cost of the watch.

2. Meenal lends ₹75,000 at C.I. for 3 years. If the rate of interest for the first two years is
15% per year and for the third year it is 16%, calculate the sum Meenal will get at the
end of the third year.

3. Govind borrows ₹18,000 at 10% simple interest. He immediately invests the money
borrowed at 10% compound interest compounded half-yearly. How much money does
Govind gain in one year?

4. A sum of money is lent at 8% per annum compound interest. If the interest for the
second year exceeds that for the first year by ₹96, find the sum of money.

5. A man borrows ₹5,000 at 12 percent compound interest payable every six months.
He repays ₹1,800 at the end of every six months. Calculate the third payment he has to
make at the end of 18 months in order to clear the entire loan.

6. A manufacturer estimates that his machine depreciates by 15% of its value at the
beginning of the year. Find the original value (cost) of the machine, if it depreciates
by ₹5,355 during the second year.

7. A man borrows ₹10,000 at 5% per annum compound interest. He repays 35% of the
sum borrowed at the end of the first year and 42% of the sum borrowed at the end of
the second year. How much must he pay at the end of the third year in order to clear the
debt?

8. A certain sum of money is put at compound interest, compounded half-yearly. If the


interest for two successive half-years are ₹650 and ₹760.50; find the rate of interest.

9. Find the sum, invested at 10% compounded annually, on which the interest for the
third year exceeds the interest of the first year by ₹252.

10. A man borrows ₹10,000 at 10% compound interest compounded yearly. At the end
of each year, he pays back 30% of the sum borrowed. How much money is left unpaid
just after the second year?

11. On a certain sum of money, lent out at C.I., interests for first, second and third years
are ₹1,500, ₹1,725 and ₹2,070 respectively. Find the rate of interest for the

(i) second year (ii) third year.


12. At what per cent per annum will ₹6,000 amount to ₹6,615 in 2 years when interest is
compounded annually?

13. At what rate per cent compound interest, does a sum of money become 1.44 times
of itself in 2 years?

14. Divide ₹28,730 between A and B so that when their shares are lent out at 10%
compound interest compounded per year, the amount that A receives in 3 years is the
same as what B receives in 5 years.

15. A sum of ₹44,200 is divided between John and Smith, 12 years and 14 years old
respectively, in such a way that if their portions be invested at 10% per annum
compound interest, they will receive equal amounts on reaching 16 years of age.

(i) What is the share of each out of ₹44,200?

(ii) What will each receive, when 16 years old?

16. A sum of money, invested at compound interest, amounts to ₹19,360 in 2 years and
to ₹23,425.60 in 4 years. Find the rate per cent and the original sum of money.

17. A sum of money lent out at C.I. at a certain rate per annum becomes three times of
itself in 8 years. Find in how many years will the money becomes twenty-seven times of
itself at the same rate of interest p.a.

18. Kamal and Anand each lent the same sum of money for 2 years at 5% at simple
interest and compound interest respectively. Anand received ₹15 more than Kamal.
Find the amount of money lent by each and the interest received.

19. Ashok invests a certain sum of money at 20% per annum, compounded yearly.
Geeta invests an equal amount of money at the same rate of interest per annum
compounded half-yearly. If Geeta gets ₹33 more than Ashok in 18 months, calculate
the money invested.

20. The cost of a machine is supposed to depreciate each year at 12% of its value at
the beginning of the year. If the machine is valued at ₹44,000 at the beginning of 2008,
find its value: (i) at the end of 2009.

(ii) at the beginning of 2007.

21. According to a census taken towards the end of the year 2009, the population of a
rural town was found to be 64,000. The census authority also found that the population
of this particular town had a growth of 5% per annum. In how many years after 2009 did
the population of this town reach 74,088?

22. The ages of Pramod and Rohit are 16 years and 18 years respectively. In what ratio
must they invest money at 5% p.a. compounded yearly so that both get the same sum
on attaining the age of 25 years?
