Abstract

The security of digital information is a fundamental concern in modern communication systems.

Cryptography, particularly symmetric key encryption, provides essential mechanisms for ensuring

data confidentiality and integrity. This thesis offers an in-depth study of modern block ciphers,

focusing on the Data Encryption Standard (DES) as a foundational example in cryptographic history.

The research begins by outlining the mathematical concepts relevant to cryptography, including

modular arithmetic and finite fields. It then explores the structure and principles of block cipher

design, specifically Substitution-Permutation Networks and Feistel networks. A detailed examination

of DES follows, covering its architecture, key schedule, and encryption process, along with known

vulnerabilities and attacks that exposed its limitations.

To provide perspective, the thesis also investigates modern block ciphers such as the Advanced

Encryption Standard (AES), comparing their security features, efficiency, and structural

improvements over DES. Finally, the study discusses the real-world implementation and application

of these algorithms in digital security systems.

Through this comparative and analytical approach, the thesis highlights the evolution of block cipher

design and emphasizes the ongoing role of mathematical theory in developing secure encryption

methods.
