Fmech_guess_paper (2)

The document is a mechanics guess paper consisting of various problems related to physics concepts such as projectile motion, friction, and center of mass. It includes calculations for a bouncing ball, a frustum of a cone, a car on a banked track, a bullet collision, an elastic string, and two colliding balls. Each problem specifies the required calculations and marks allocated for each part.

Further Mechanics Guess Paper

Total marks: 50
1. A ball bounces on the 30° inclined plane such that it rebounds perpendicular
to the incline with a velocity of 12 ms-1

Determine the distance R to where it strikes the plane at B.

[5]

2. A frustum of a uniform solid right-circular cone is of height 3a and the radii of

the plane faces are 2a and a.

(i) Find the centre of mass of the frustum from its base.
[3]

(ii) The frustum is freely suspended from a point on the edge of the smaller plane
face. A particle is attached to the lowest point of this face such that the line
joining the plane faces passing through the point is horizontal. Find the weight of
the particle, given that the weight of the frustum is W.
[3]
3. (i) A car of mass m travelling at 28 ms-1 has no tendency to slip on a track of
radius 200 m banked at an angle of θ. Find the value of θ.
[3]

(ii) When the speed is increased to 35 ms-1, the car is just on the point of slipping
up the track. Calculate the coefficient of friction between the car and the track.
[5]

4. A bullet of mass M is fired with a velocity of 50 ms-1 at an angle α with the

horizontal. At the highest point of its trajectory, it collides head-on with a bob of
mass 2.5M suspended by means of a light string of length 3 m and gets embedded
in the bob. After the collision the string swings just through an angle of 30
Determine the angle α.
[6]

5. A light elastic string of natural length 2a has its ends fixed to two points A and
B in a horizontal line where AB = 2a. A particle P of mass m is fastened to the
midpoint of the string and is held midway between A and B. When released, the
particle first comes to instantaneous rest when both portions of string are at 60°
to AB.

(i) Find the modulus of elasticity of the string. [4]

(ii) Find the acceleration of particle P at the point where it is at its instantaneous
rest. [2]

6. A particle P of mass m kg is projected vertically upwards with a speed of u

ms-1 and is acted on by an air resistance of magnitude mkv2, where v is its
velocity in ms-1 at a given time, t seconds, and k is a positive constant.

(i) Find the greatest height of P in terms of k, u and g. [5]

(ii) Show that the time taken for P to reach this height is given by: [4]
7. The points O and P are on a horizontal plane, a distance 2a m apart. A ball A is
thrown from O 2√(ga) with speed ms-1 at an angle θ above the horizontal, where
tanθ = 0.75. At the same instant, another identical ball B is launched with √(ga)
ms-1 parallel to the horizontal plane from a point vertically above P. Both the balls
move in the same vertical plane. After a moment, they collide with each other.

(i) Find the angle below the horizontal line of collision at which ball A collides
with ball B correct to 3 significant figures.
[5]

(ii) Find the speed of ball A after collision in terms of k√(ga), giving k correct to 3
significant figures [5]
