GUIDED NOTE CHAPTER 5

This document covers the fundamentals of metabolism and enzymes, including definitions, mechanisms, and the roles of enzymes in biological processes. It discusses the differences between anabolism and catabolism, the naming conventions for enzymes, and factors influencing enzyme action. Additionally, it explores the applications of enzymes in various industries and includes a quick check section with questions related to enzyme functions and characteristics.

GUIDED NOTE CHAPTER 5 : METABOLISME AND ENZYME

5.1 Metabolism
1. Define metabolism AND state two types of mechanisms with example (tree map)
2. State the similarities and differences between anabolism and catabolism(use table)

5.2 Enzymes

1) Define enzymes.
2) Reason out the necessity of enzymes in metabolism. (use bubble map)
3) Describe the naming of enzymes with the addition of –ase to their substrates.
4) Complete table below.

Name of Name of enzyme Secretion occur in…..

substrate
Eg: Starch Amylase Mouth,duodenum small
intestine
1. Maltose
2. Sucrose
3. Lactose
4. Protein
5. Polypeptide Protease/ tripsin Duodenum
6. Dipeptide
7. Lipid Duodenum, small intestine
8. Glucose Hexokinase Mitochondria

5) Characterise the general properties of enzymes. ( bubble map).

FUNDAMENTALS OF BIOLOGY

6) Based on diagram 1
i. explain How are extracellular enzymes produced? (use flow map)

Diagram 1

ii. Compare contrast between extracellular and intracellular enzymes

7) Explain the Mechanism of enzyme action based on lock and key hypothesis (flow map)

8) Explain Factors that influence the mechanism of enzyme action. (use table)

Factor Graph Explaination / effect

Temperature
pH value
Concentration of

Concentration of
substrate
5.3 Application of Enzymes in Daily Life
1. Give examples of industries that use enzymes in the manufacturing of products. (use
table).
2. How does immobilized enzyme technology help to accelerate the enzyme reaction?

QUICK CHECK 5

1. Some chefs sometimes wrap meat in papaya leaves and the meat is marinated for 5 hours
before it is cooked. What is the purpose of wrapping with papaya leaves?

2. Why are apples that have been boiled after they are peeled, do not change colour to
brown?

3. What will happen if ribosomes in a pancreas cell do not function?

4. Why must our body temperature be maintained at 37°C?

5. Y is the enzyme that catalyses the hydrolysis of sucrose into glucose and fructose. What
is enzyme Y?

6. (a) State two characteristics of enzymes.

(b) Explain why only certain substrate can combine with enzymes.
(c) (i) What is the hypothesis that is used to explain the mechanism of enzyme action? In
this hypothesis, what represents the structure of enzymes and the structure of the
substrate?
(ii) Which characteristics of enzymes can explain this hypothesis?

7. Fresh fruits can be processed to produce juice. Fruits are crushed and squeezed before
the juice is extracted. Plant cells contain strong cellulose walls. However, if enzymes
that contain pectinase enzymes are used, more juice can be extracted. Based on this
information, suggest one laboratory experiment that can extract more fruit juice than the
pressing method.
